Holy Saturday is a solemn day of watching and waiting outside the tomb.

The day ends, however, with the celebration of the Easter Vigil after sunset. We light a fire, carry candles, read and meditate on scripture, pray, and then gather for a joyous communion service celebrating Christ's resurrection. We will also be celebrating the baptism of a new member of Christ's body, David Ball.

Join us tonight, April 4, at 8:00 pm for the Easter Vigil service.

On Good Friday, we remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus. We gather for prayer and to venerate a wooden cross.

The cross was an instrument of cruel torture and ex*****on. It was a sign of death.

But Jesus was lifted up on the cross and, in being lifted up, transformed the cross from a sign of death into his glorious throne. Jesus' death on the cross revealed his true nature to the centurion who declared, "Surely, this man was the son of God."

Please join us for a Good Friday service at 6:00 pm.

Wise and comforting words from our diocesan bishop.

A Letter from the Bishop: God Is Making All Things New

From the earliest days of the Church, the death and resurrection of Jesus was not called Easter but Passover, because Christians believed it was a continuation and fulfillment of the Passover events depicted in Exodus. In fact, in most languages today, Easter is still known as Passover: Paske, Pascua, or Pesach, and even in English, we call the light of the resurrected Christ the Paschal Candle.

Maundy Thursday receives its name from the "mandatum", "mandate" or "command", given by Jesus at the Last Supper. Of course, there were several commands given: "Take." "Eat." "Drink." "Do this in remembrance of me." "So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet." And most explicitly, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another."

On Maundy Thursday, we wash each other's feet, share in the bread and wine, but most importantly, we also follow the command to love one another as Christ has loved us.

Join us Thursday, April 2, at 6:00 pm for our Maundy Thursday service.

After the service, members of St. John's will keep a Vigil in the Garden. Throughout the night until 7:00 am Friday morning, someone from St. John's will be sitting in prayer before the reserved Blessed Sacrament (communion bread and wine), keeping vigil with Christ in the Garden.

At 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning, we will have a simple morning prayer service and consume the remaining reserved Sacrament.

Holy Week is an important week of prayer and worship. We accompany Jesus through his triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, dine with Jesus during the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, pray with Jesus in the Garden, contemplate his crucifixion on Good Friday, and rejoice in his Resurrection on Saturday evening/Sunday morning.

Please join us for the following Holy Week services.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Lenten season.

During Lent, we walk with Jesus toward his crucifixion on Good Friday, as well as with those who are preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil.

Lent is a season of self-examination and renewal. We examine our lives for those places where we can grow more into the likeness of Christ. We renew our commitment to our Christian faith, and we engage in practices of self-discipline.

We mark this beginning by receiving the Sign of the Cross in ashes on our foreheads as a reminder of our humanity and our humility.

St. John's will host an Ash Wednesday service at 6:00 pm on February 18.

May this Lenten season be a time of examination, renewal, and growth in holiness.

Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, it was a time for people to be "shriven", to receive absolution through the rite of reconciliation.

Although it is no longer the case, Lent also involved fasting from oil, eggs, milk, and sugar. A good way to use up these supplies before Lent was to make pancakes.

And so arose the tradition of the Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner!

St. John's will be hosting a pancake dinner on February 17 at 6:00 pm. The dinner is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the White Flag ministry.
