When issues of bicycle and pedestrian safety come up, it's common for many people, including well-meaning ones, to suggest those road users ought to “follow the law” more. Some of those comments arose again after the deaths of Dave Salovesh and Abdul Seck, even though both were innocent bystande...

This FB page was un-published" on 12/31/16. Today, 2/6/21, I decided to re-publish it due to renewed interest in making the South Hills friendlier to non-motorized and mass transportation modalities. There is another FB page called, "Safe Streets South Hills" that I subscribe to at this time. I did not re-publish to compete with the good work on that page. Rather, because I felt there are a lot of good information and photographs here, they could be mined and shared with the other page. I hope this page will be enjoyed and used as another resource for anyone interested in the improvement and safety of the aforementioned transportation modalities.

Nice wide shoulder along McLaughlin Run Road, in Upper St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The road was resurfaced this past season and the shoulders were widened and improved. With infrastructure like this, one can ride safely and without having to be in the traffic lane.

From Geoff Anderson at Smart Growth America:

"The division among voters nationally received enormous attention, but local election results were the latest demonstration of an electorate largely united on the need to improve our cities, towns, and neighborhoods and the path to get there. Measures to fund biking, walking, and transit passed around the country in both Democrat and Republican counties and towns. In fact, seventy-one percent of transit measures passed, continuing the trend that's been true since 2000."

From Eric Boerer at Bike Pittsburgh:

All-

Some good news today - hopefully will raise some spirits.

The Mayor's Completes Streets Ordinance is heading to City Council for Committee vote on Monday.

Why Monday? Well Council is rearranging their schedule to pull a double header and do the typical Tues/Wed Council business on Monday.

It just so happens that the CS Ordinance will be getting a Committee vote that day.
It also just so happens that BikePGH's Members' Meeting is that night.

For those who haven't been following a brief timeline:
April 2015: Mayor Peduto issues Complete Streets Executive Order, basically telling his staff to start incorporating CS principles in the work they do, among other things
Dec 2016: Dept of City Planning launches initiative for a Complete Streets Ordinance, which aims change the law to require CS principles in new develpment, new and redesigned road projects
July 2016: Planning Commission unanimously approves the Ordinance
Nov 14, 2016: It's going to Council Committee for preliminary approval. If it passes, it will get voted on by full council the following Tues.
Here's more info with relevant links and whatnot.

Anyway, we're feeling pretty confidant it will pass. However, I do have a healthy skepticism of the polls these days, so I'm asking you to please send a brief email or letter to your Councilperson in support of this Ordinance. If your Councilperson's email address is hard to fine, it's still OK to call the office, and leave a message to let them know that you support the Ordinance. It doesn't have to be too big or comprehensive, just want them to know that their constituents are watching and paying attention to this.

Thanks!

At our 2014 Members' Meeting we launched a campaign for a Complete Streets Policy. On the day of our 2016 Members' Meeting, Council to vote on it.
