Do you want to empower others or enable them?
When our hearts are touched, we are often moved enough to take action. For many of us in resourceful situations, that means donations & a "quick fix" mentality. We don't understand the entire situation & then sometimes judge the way that those funds are used. For example, did you know that many aid programs have a low $ amount that recipients are allowed to save before they are "cut off" from the program? We would likely make the exact same choice to spend on whatever we can, not save, because that's the logical option to keep the only source of funds we may have.
If we REALLY want to help, we need to be sure we are somehow contributing for the long haul, coming alongside those in need, empowering them to reach their goals.
I strongly encourage you to read this book "Helping Without Hurting." Clearly, it has a faith-base; for those of you that don't share my faith, it's ok - you'll see the value of the concepts, don't worry. And for all of us, hope you're ready to learn something about yourself, too. That's what mentoring really does - empowers us all.
