Concord Faith and Finance Initiative

Concord Faith and Finance Initiative CFFI is a cooperative effort between churches and community organizations to begin breaking the spiritual, social, and material bonds of poverty.

Historic Christian teaching understands poverty as the collective result of sin and brokenness in the world—everything from broken individuals and families to broken governments and businesses. Jesus is in the business of restoring the brokenness of the world - including the brokenness that leads to poverty. The church has the privilege of continuing that mission. United Baptist Church, in coopera

tion with a group of volunteers called “Grace in Crisis” invites area churches and organizations to join with us in a new faith-based initiative to help individuals and families rise from poverty. Faith and Finances is a course developed and tested by the Chalmers Center to give low income people tools to navigate the maze of financial challenges that they face daily. Faith and Finances begins by helping learners change their fundamental understanding of how money works, and then walks them through a step-by-step process of successfully changing the way they approach financial decisions. Financial education is not usually targeted toward low-income people. Nevertheless, learning how money works is an essential part of the financial empowerment that enables them to raise themselves out of their difficult position. Other valuable programs seek to change the unjust economic structures in our society. Faith and Finances approaches the problem from a different direction, giving individuals and families the means to take responsibility for their own situation and rediscover their God-given dignity.

We are excited to announce that we have two super sharp people who have committed to become facilitators for our Concord Faith and Finance Programs. Please pray for them as the begin online training at the end of this month, and go to Florida for live training toward the end of October. We may be running our first class as early as the first week of December!

The wheels are starting to turn again. Keith Daigneault will be our first Facilitator/Instructor for Faith and Finance. With him on board, we hope to launch our first class in early 2020. Praise God for his faithfulness and answering prayer.

Now we need volunteers to support the class. Keep your eyes and ears open. We'll keep you posted as thing continue to develop.

We are looking for volunteers to assist mentoring Faith & Finance students. You do not have to be a background in financial services, but you do need to have a heart to serve disadvantaged people. Who do you know?

GOOD NEWS! We just received a check from an anonymous donor that completes our funding. A little over half of our budget comes from local churches, and this comes from a foundation that grants startup funds for gospel focused ministry. They matched our church donations. On May 1 we will start recruiting our volunteer team, starting with 3 workshop facilitators.

Do you want to empower others or enable them?

When our hearts are touched, we are often moved enough to take action. For many of us in resourceful situations, that means donations & a "quick fix" mentality. We don't understand the entire situation & then sometimes judge the way that those funds are used. For example, did you know that many aid programs have a low $ amount that recipients are allowed to save before they are "cut off" from the program? We would likely make the exact same choice to spend on whatever we can, not save, because that's the logical option to keep the only source of funds we may have.

If we REALLY want to help, we need to be sure we are somehow contributing for the long haul, coming alongside those in need, empowering them to reach their goals.

I strongly encourage you to read this book "Helping Without Hurting." Clearly, it has a faith-base; for those of you that don't share my faith, it's ok - you'll see the value of the concepts, don't worry. And for all of us, hope you're ready to learn something about yourself, too. That's what mentoring really does - empowers us all.

Concord Faith and Finance Initiative needs a total of $5000 in place to begin executing our plan. We recently received another pledge from a local church, bringing our total to $1750 pledged or donated. Talk to your church and see if they will join us in work that encourages flourishing in our community.

CFFI is in the fund raising stage, seeking to raise just over $5000 to launch Faith & Finances here in Concord NH. We will be offering this course as a service to local social services agencies whose clients can benefit from learning healthy and helpful habits for thinking about and managing money. If you would like to volunteer, we have lots of opportunities ranging from trainers (the subject of this article), mentors, and logistical support. Comment here, or send us a FB message if you want to know more.
