Teachings of Presidents of The Church: Howard W. Hunter

Teachings of Presidents of The Church: Howard W. Hunter “When we put God first, all other things fall into their proper place or drop out of our lives.”
-Ezra Taft Benson. Amen.

Since the beautiful manual was given to me on Sunday, a day have not passed without opening the pages to read from it. The life of this great servant of God is really inspiring. His teachings are divine and his, was a life of service and sacrifice. I felt the need to create a page where I and others can share insights as we study the rich teachings of this prophet, thus improve our lives thereby.

I am sure this will also help to improve our preparations to meaningfully contribute in our high priest group, elders quorum and relief society classes. This prophet has two "measures at arriving at final decisions. 'What are the wishes of First Presidency?' 'Which is best for the kingdom of God'?"

May our lives be greatly enhanced as www study "Teachings of President of the Church- Joseph Fielding Smith."

RS GENERAL CONFERENCE: Some Counsel For Sisters and Brothers Also

President Howard Hunter taught "The family is the most important unit in time and in eternity and, as such, transcends every other interest in life."

"The greatest training that can be given to a child is that which comes from the example of parents. Parents need to set the example for young people to follow. Great strength comes from the home where righteous principles are taught, where there is love and respect for each other, where prayer has been an influence in the family life, and where there is respect for those things that pertain to God."
He further advised the men to "express regularly to your wife and children your reverence and respect for her. Indeed, one of the greatest things a father can do for his children is to love their mother.
"Mothers perform a labor the priesthood cannot do. For this gift of life, the priesthood should have love unbounded for the mothers of their children."

He plead that we should "Pray as families both night and morning. What great blessings come into the lives of children who hear their parents petition the Lord for their welfare."

He concluded by counselling parents whose children left the true path; "Don’t give up hope for a boy or a girl who has strayed. Many who have appeared to be completely lost have returned. We must be prayerful and, if possible, let our children know of our love and concern.
We should never let Satan fool us into thinking that all is lost."

We live in a very dangerous world that threatens those things that are most spiritual. The family is under attack from forces seen and unseen. We need to live in such a way that the adversary cannot steal into our homes.

We are so blessed to be learning from the life of President Howard W. Hunter this year in Priesthood and Relief Society. He's an extraordinary man whose life was filled with so many experiences and messages that can change our own.

Here's just one such incident from President Hunter's trip to Jerusalem, a trip that illustrates the depth of peace that can come from living the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In 1989, President Hunter had an . . . experience during which he felt peace in a troubling time. He was in Jerusalem to dedicate the Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. Several groups had protested the Church’s presence in Jerusalem, and some had threatened violence. One of the speakers at the dedication was Elder Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve, who later related this incident:

“As I was speaking, there was some excitement in the back of the hall. Men in military uniforms had entered the room. They sent a note to President Hunter. I turned and asked for instructions. He said, ‘There’s been a bomb threat. Are you afraid?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Neither am I; finish your talk.’” The dedication services proceeded without incident; there was no bomb.

In situations like these, President Hunter trusted in this promise of peace from the Savior, which he often quoted: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). (Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Howard W. Hunter)

As President Hunter teaches us, “Peace can come to an individual only by an unconditional surrender—surrender to him who is the Prince of peace, who has the power to confer peace.”

What are you going through at this stage in your life? Just SURRENDER! Surrender to the Master of Peace.

Help From On High:

President Hunter taught, "Perhaps no promise in life is more reassuring than that promise of divine assistance and spiritual guidance in times of need."

He knew the importance of this promise and that's the reason he is asking that we "We must take time to prepare our minds for spiritual things. The development of spiritual capacity does not come with the conferral of authority. There must be desire, effort, and personal preparation.
This requires, of course, … fasting, prayer, searching the scriptures, experience, meditation,.." But "Unfortunately we sometimes find this lack of reverence even within the Church. Occasionally we visit too loudly, enter and leave meetings too disrespectfully in what should be an hour of prayer and purifying worship. Reverence is the atmosphere of heaven. Prayer is the utterance of the soul to God the Father."

If we desire revelations to guide us, we must be ready and because we don't know when and where it will occur, we must be a ready vessel at times and in all places.

Watch this video "Daily Bread: Pattern" and it will give us more insights on why our daily spiritual sustenance should be strong.

Just as we need daily physical sustenance, the need for daily spiritual sustenance is just as strong. We can remember Jesus Christ every day as we pray, read the scriptures, and meditate.

"Nothing Will Ever Go Permanently Wrong."-Pres. Hunter.

Being Latter day Saints did not mean we will be exempted from trials of life, and in fact, Jesus Christ knowing this, gave a consoling promise when He was leaving; "My peace I leave with you."

In 2016, let us be strong and not allow the trials of life push us off our focus on Jesus Christ. President Hunter said: "If our lives and our faith are centered upon Jesus Christ and his restored gospel, nothing can ever go permanently wrong.”
That is a promise that "NOTHING WILL EVER GO PERMANENTLY WRONG."
Hold on to that in 2016 and your life will be happily blessed,

This Sunday, January 3rd, 2016; will be the first Sunday of the year and will mark the beginning of a new year of study of the teachings of President of the Church.

President Howard W. Hunter, whose nine months as President of the Church were marked by calls for members to be more Christlike and temple worthy, will be taught for the entire year.

He was released from his earthly ministry when he died the morning of Friday, March 3. He was eighty-seven years old.
President Hunter passed away at 8:35 A.M. in his apartment one block east of the Salt Lake Temple. With him were his wife, Inis; his nurse; and his personal secretary.

He had struggled with serious medical problems for many years and through those years of struggle, he refused to let his health problems keep him from carrying on the labor in the kingdom that he loved so much. To Latter-day Saints, he was an example of sacrifice and endurance in serving God.

We wish you happy study.
