Nobody gives you a rulebook for church.
You attend, meet people, get involved, and eventually discover there are dozens of expectations nobody really explains. How do you disagree with leadership without being considered disloyal? How do you actually become connected instead of simply attending? What does the church expect when you volunteer? How should you handle conflict with another member? When is something a legitimate biblical concern, and when is it simply a personal preference?
The Unwritten Church takes an honest and practical look at the parts of church life that rarely make it into membership classes or volunteer handbooks.
The book explores church culture, pastoral authority, disagreement, belonging, serving, volunteer commitment, policies and expectations, conflict, gossip, forgiveness, knowing when it may be time to leave, and what it means to become a healthy and contributing member of a congregation.
It is not a book attacking churches or pastors. In fact, much of it challenges us as church members to take greater responsibility for the way we participate in church.
Sometimes we need to communicate instead of assuming. We may need to have a difficult conversation rather than talking to everyone except the person involved. We need to honor the commitments we make, understand that belonging requires effort, extend grace when people make mistakes, and recognize that not every disagreement is a biblical crisis.
And occasionally, when the problem is simply that church did not do something the way we wanted, we may need to grow up and stop being a baby. 😂
Every church is different, but the principles that help people navigate church life are remarkably consistent. Clear communication, personal responsibility, faithful service, healthy boundaries, grace, biblical discernment, and a little maturity can prevent many of the problems that become unnecessarily divisive.
