Chapter 1 says there are four types of people (X = Christ):
I not X (unbeliever)
I & X (1 of many ways)
X & I (saved but "in control"--miserable "unbelieving believer")
X not I (Christian--or a "Christ-in"; literally: "little Christ"; Gal 2:20)
David made a key point that the first three struggle with the issue of control. Although control is an illusion, we constantly struggle with letting go and trusting that Christ in us is enough in "all things." (Rom 8:28)
How do we move from the third to the fourth person? [Christ as Savior > Lord > Life!]
Usually some sort of problem or suffering.
“And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”
2 Corinthians 12:9
It has been my experience that God permits situations that require our yielding to the reality that He in us is enough; I can't, but Christ in me can do all things; He is our adequacy (“Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,” 2 Cor 3:5 )
God permits all self-sufficiency to fail so that we might discover that He never does! We might say, God is like a bulldozer, not wrecking our will, but pushing us into His.
Why am I resisting instead of trusting? How's that working for me?
“My old identity has been co-crucified with Christ and no longer lives. And now the essence of this new life is no longer mine, for the Anointed One lives his life through me—we live in union as one! My new life is empowered by the faith of the Son of God who loves me so much that he gave himself for me, dispensing his life into mine!”
Galatians 2:20 TPT
“Everything we could ever need for life and godliness has already been deposited in us by his divine power...”
2 Peter 1:3 TPT
