This Sunday, 6-7-26, at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church :

Sermon - "I Desire Mercy."

Old Testament Scripture - Psalm 33:1-12

New Testament Scripture - Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

Jesus called Matthew to be his disciple, and Matthew was a tax collector! It didn’t get much worse than being a tax collector during Jesus' time on earth. They were sinners who cheated their very own people! But, Jesus did not stop there, he sat at table with Matthew and other tax collectors. One did not sit at table and eat with sinners. When Jesus heard the Pharisees grumbling about this he said, “Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy not sacrifice. For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.'” The Pharisees were quick to judge and complain about “the sinners.” All these years later, and still many in the church judge and complain instead of showing mercy. Judgement and scorn are never the answer. Mercy and love are always the answer.

Sermon - "The Milkman’s Gift"

Old Testament Scripture - Psalm 8

New Testament Scripture - Matthew 28:16-20

Have you ever heard it said that God will never put more on you than you can handle? I don’t know about you, but sometimes I wish God did not have so much confidence in me. At the end of the Gospel of Matthew, he gives the disciples “The Great Commission.” He tells the disciples to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.” These words are not only for the 11 disciples he spoke them to, but to us as well. Some of us might not feel up to the task or worthy enough to fulfill these words. Let us then remember the words of God in Psalm 8 when we are told we are made a little lower than God, and we have been crowned with glory and honor and we have been given dominion over the works of God’s hands. So what does this have to do with the milkman? Join us Sunday, 5/31/26, in worship and find out.

Holy One, let your Spirit, our Advocate, guide us—preserving us from judgment, protecting us from sin, and leading us into righteousness, so that we may testify to the good news: fullness of life and joy for all; through Jesus Christ our Savior and in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised the gathered disciples that the power of the Holy Spirit will be given to them. Just as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit descended upon on them on that Pentecost day a long time ago. But the Spirit did not come quietly! The Holy Spirit came with the sound of a mighty rushing wind, and flames of fire. The Holy Spirit came to breathe new life into the small struggling church. The Holy Spirit empowered first the 12 disciples and then many others to spread the word of God’s love through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit today breathes new life into the church and it is a power that cannot be contained.

This Sunday is Ascension Sunday. From the beginning, God told us that Jesus came from heaven and would one day return to heaven. The passage from Acts describes Jesus' ascension. Right before Jesus ascends to heaven he tells his disciples to carry on his work of spreading the good news of God's love, and he reminds them they are not left alone. The Holy Spirit will be with them to help. Over 2,000 years later, Jesus' message is still the same for us. We are to spread God's love in the world with the help of the Holy Spirit.
