Should we be needy?
In Psalm 40:17, David describes himself as being "poor and needy". He did so several times throughout his Psalms, where he responded to his need by saying, "you are my help", "answer me", "my heart is stricken within me." Perhaps you've been there; perhaps you are now!?
We might think some people are spiritual "giants" who rarely live with a sense of need. David wasn't one of them! Scripture shows being needy is the normal condition for the believer. In fact, it can be said we're never in greater spiritual danger than when we think we're anything else but people in need. The Pharisee in Luke 18 was in that danger, the tax collector knew better!
In the place of need, Jesus said we're blessed (Matthew 5:3). David knew he was as well, because in the rest of Psalm 40:17 he went on to say, because of his need, "the Lord takes thought of me." What a glorious comfort that is to those who are His!
