The Church teaches that decisions about having and spacing children in marriage, are meant to flow from spousal love understood as self-gift—a love that is unitive (true communion between husband and wife) and fruitful (openness and responsible service to new life), rather than from selfishness or from treating children as a burden or from relying on “techniques” instead of love.
