Last Sunday many churches began the celebration of Advent by lighting the first of five candles in the Advent wreath. Let me offer a glimpse of history from a different perspective. Growing up in Washington, D.C. during the 50s and 60s, I saw prejudice from both sides of the fence, and I want to say at the outset that stereotypes that govern our fears are wrong and have been and continue to be wrongly exploited to keep us separate.
