"Be careful with identity. It is not a small thing. Identity becomes your default setting. It becomes the lens through which you interpret pain, temptation, and hardship. And life will shake you. It will hit you in the face without warning. It will test the foundation beneath your feet. If you believe, deep down, that you are still an addict at your core, then when pressure rises, you will return to who you believe you are. You will drift back toward the bottle, the needle, the toxic relationship, the strip club, the old escape routes carved into your nervous system. Not because you want to, but because identity always pulls you home.
But if your identity is anchored in Jesus Christ, if you truly believe you are a born-again son or daughter of God, washed, redeemed, made new, then when life hits you, you will not run back to Egypt. You will run to the Cross. You will fall at the feet of the One who already defeated the grave, already broke the chains, and already disarmed the enemy. You will return not to the substance, but to the Savior. Not to the coping mechanism, but to the Conqueror.
This is not denial of the past. It is declaration of victory. It is not pretending you were never bound. It is proclaiming that you are no longer owned. The enemy wants you to rehearse your former name. Jesus calls you by a new one. And the name you answer to will determine the direction you run when the storm comes.
You are not your worst decision. You are not your relapse. You are not the sin that once held you hostage. In Christ, you are redeemed, restored, and redefined."
