Tuning out the "Din."

If human listening is hard work, discerning the subtle voice of the Holy Spirit amidst our daily routines can feel impossible. We are constantly barraged by societal expectations, internal anxieties, and our own ambitions.

Dallas Willard once wrote that the primary enemy of our spiritual life is hurry. God rarely speaks through a megaphone; He speaks at the volume of intimacy. Where can you find 5 minutes of intentional silence today to simply quiet the din?

“Go from your country...
to the land that I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1)

On Sunday, we looked at Abraham's call. God didn't hand him a physical map or a 5-year plan upfront; He gave him a relationship and a directive to move. Abraham had to tune out the voice of safety and comfort in Haran to step out into the unseen.

Faith rarely gives us a detailed itinerary. Often, it's just about taking the next obedient step with the light we have right now. What’s one small, practical step of obedience the Spirit is prompting you to take today?

“Compassion constitutes a radical form of criticism,
for it announces that the hurt is to be taken seriously,
that the hurt is not to be accepted as normal and natural
but is an abnormal and unacceptable condition for humanness.”
~Walter Brueggemann

🎧 “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.”

We kicked off our week yesterday talking about how noisy our culture has become, and why true listening takes exhausting, intentional work. When we are constantly drafting our next rebuttal or filtering others through our own assumptions, we stop hearing them.

As we head into the workweek, let’s practice a little space. Before you respond to someone today, take a breath and try to simply hear what they are actually trying to communicate.

To take with you this week
by Patricia Ramsden
·
Lord, here I sit in the promise of another day.
Let me use it to its fullest.
Let me see its joy and dance in the music of love it plays.
For this is the day you have made.
Let me rejoice and be glad in it!

What might David Bowie have in common with Abraham?
“If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting.”
― David Bowie
