Today is the of St. Josephine Bakhita. She was born in Sudanโ€™s Darfur region in 1869 and died in Vicenza, Italy in 1947 where she is affectionately called Mother Moretta ("Our Black Mother"). She was kidnapped from her home country at nine years of age and sold in the slave markets. Bakhita was not her real name, it was the Arabic name given by her kidnappers, meaning 'fortunate'. She was eventually bought by an Italian Consul who treated her kindly and later brought her to Italy where she served as a nanny. The Italian government declared her a free woman and that she was held as a slave illegally. She was baptized with the name of Josephine in 1890 and joined the Canossian Sisters in Venice in 1896. She was known by all as a heroically virtuous woman, leading to her canonization by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000. She famously said, "If I was to meet those slave raiders that abducted me and those who tortured me, I'd kneel down to them to kiss their hands, because, if it had not have been for them, I would not have become a Christian and religious woman." St. Josephine Bakhita is the patron saint of Sudan and victims of slavery and human trafficking. St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us!
