Our neighbor Ricky in Evanston was a good guy, joyful, and kind most of the time. He dealt with addiction and it won. But, we know that God has defeated for all time any of the pain or problems that lay beyond Ricky’s control and that God’s mercy endures. So, we pray that God accepts Ricky into those arms of mercy that can heal all earthly wounds. Rest in Peace Brother Ricky.

Clarence B. Jones, one of the organizers of the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered an epic speech, has died. He was 95.

Till his death at an assisted living facility in Cupertino, California, Jones remained a keeper of King’s legacy and a vocal critic of attempts to undermine the gains African-Americans have made since the Civil Rights battles in the 1960s.

Just last month, Jones criticized President Donald Trump’s push to redraw Congressional maps as an effort to weaken Black voting power.

The 20th century monk Thomas Merton said that each of us has the spark of the divine inside of us, which is where God dwells.

The promise of the Holy Spirit coming at Pentecost is that God can turn that spark into a fire for his works.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed, tired, you're grieving, or confused, because the world keeps showing us that it isn't heaven.

Take comfort, because it only takes a spark to get a fire going.

The Holy Spirit will find you, if you keep that spark alive.

Our former bishop, the Rt. Rev. Tom Breidenthal, who was recently at the diocese’s celebration of 150 years has passed away. Please pray for his family.

The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio gives thanks for the life and ministry of our ninth bishop diocesan, the Rt. Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal. Bishop Breidenthal died yesterday evening surrounded by his family. He was 75.

Bishop White shares, “Tom Breidenthal’s ministry in this diocese was marked by wisdom and theological commitment. He challenged people throughout the diocese to think more deeply, to love more fully, and to follow Christ more faithfully—a witness to the transformational power of life in Jesus Christ. I am deeply grateful for his life and witness and for the care he shared with me, personally. I join with people across this diocese and the wider Church in commending him to God’s eternal care.”

The 1970's R&B group The Sylvers recorded a song in 1981 called "Just when I thought it was over." The sentiment of that song is a good reflection on how the resurrection can be viewed in the light of the sin it is meant to conquer.

Romans 6 is sometimes construed to say that Jesus' resurrection ended sin for all time, but as St. Paul goes on to say in Romans 7, and as our Scriptures for the 5th Sunday of Easter make clear, "Just when you thought it was over, here it goes again."

The resurrection doesn't take away our personal sins, but it did give us "power over sin," which is the ability to go to Jesus, when we fall short. This is because the resurrection is an equal and opposite, "Just when you thought it was over" moment.

And, "here HE comes again."

People of God in Southern Ohio,

I write to invite your prayers for our former bishop, the Rt. Rev. Thomas Breidenthal. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer which has now progressed to an advanced stage.

With his permission, I share with you that Bishop Breidenthal has now entered hospice care. I’ve spoken with him and assured him of our continuing prayer from Southern Ohio.

I bid your prayers for Bishop Breidenthal, his wife Margaret, and their family, as they care for him throughout these days. With that invitation, I offer this collect, adapted from the Office of Ministration to the Sick:

Gracious God, giver of life and health: Comfort and relieve your servant Thomas, and give your power of healing to those who minister to his needs, that he may be strengthened in his weakness and have confidence in your loving care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Kristin Uffelman White
X Bishop
