The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Today, we celebrate the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. It is the perfect conclusion to what was begun with the Immaculate Conception. It has been said, “The glorification of Mary is, therefore, the crowning of her journey of faith and singular grace; it is the feast of her predestination to eternal happiness in glory.” In his letter to the Philippians, St. Paul assured them, “...that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6). Holy Mary, pray for us!

June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was only fitting that the U. S. Bishops consecrated our country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 11th of this year. The consecration was in lieu of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4. What a blessing for our county as we get ready to celebrate a very special 4th of July!

The history behind the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates back to 1673. At a monastery belonging to the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in eastern France, Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque began experiencing visions of the Sacred Heart that continued for 18 months. Jesus told Sister Margaret Mary to promote a feast that honored his Sacred Heart. In 1856, Pope Pius IX designated the Friday following the feast of Corpus Christi as the feast of the Sacred Heart for the universal Church. Ever since, the month of June has been devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and his immense love for us all.

We will return to the beautiful grounds of Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary and School of Theology on Tuesday, June 9. Mass will begin at 6 pm with a reception to follow.
