Do you know the answer? Before St. Catherine of Siena successfully urged Pope Gregory XI to return to Rome in 1377, the papacy was located in Avignon, France. From 1309 to 1376 there were seven French popes. St. Catherine encouraged Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome after the death of St. Bridget of Sweden. Pope Gregory XI officially returned the papal seat to Rome in January 1377. ⁣

Steward Saint: St. Mark the Evangelist⁣
Feast Day: April 25⁣
St. Mark was an evangelist, a teller of the Gospel story, but he did not experience those events first-hand. He heard the stories from St. Peter and wrote them down, careful not to omit or falsify anything of what he had heard. His Gospel recounts the life of Christ from Bethlehem to Calvary, not as a purely historical record, but as a proclamation of the truth that Jesus is the Son of God. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, St. Mark used his talents as a writer with the result that the Word he heard and believed could be heard and believed and lived by Christians twenty centuries later! In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that he also made several journeys with St. Paul and consoled St. Paul while he was in prison in Rome. St. Mark, pray for us!

Steward Saint: St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1578-1622), priest and martyr⁣
Feast Day: April 24⁣
Complete generosity to others was the hallmark of this saint. A lawyer who took the cases of the poor and oppressed, he eventually grew disenchanted by the injustice he witnessed and left the practice of law to become a Capuchin. In addition to preaching, he was devoted to the care of the sick and the poor. In his last sermon, St. Fidelis explained it this way: “What is it that today makes true followers of Christ? To cast luxuries aside, leave pleasures behind, and endure difficulties and pain? It is living faith that expresses itself through love. It is this that makes us put aside the goods of the present in the hope of future goods.” St. Fidelis, pray for us!

On the feast of St. George, we honor this early Christian martyr who gave his life in witness to Christ. Though often remembered in legend for his courage, St. George is venerated above all for his steadfast faith and willingness to stand firm in the face of persecution.⁣

Here in our Archdiocese, St. George Church in Georgetown shares in that legacy of faith. First established in 1902 as the Assumption of Mary, the parish has continued to grow and serve its community for more than a century. The present church was built and blessed in 1952, with later additions supporting parish life and formation, and today it remains an active part of the Sacred Heart Family of Parishes.⁣

As we celebrate this feast, may the witness of St. George inspire us to live our faith with courage and fidelity. St. George, pray for us.
