A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 38. One commentary that I read calls this chapter,”I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.” This chapter teaches believers in Christ that God will dispense His discipline to His followers without malice.
One lesson that you and I must learn from this Psalm is that sin is destructive to the followers of Christ. David confessed that even his health was affected by his sin. Yet not all sin brings illness to believers. He was also burdened down because of his sin. He became repentant and finally confessed to the LORD, “I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.” (V. 18)
Did you notice in verses 5-10 that the Psalmist does not try to explain his illness. However he does assume that his sin is the root cause of his illness. As a result he does pray that God will not be angry and wrathful with him. He prayed as Jeremiah did to the LORD, “Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger lest you bring me to nothing.” (Jeremiah 10:24)
As a follower of Christ, have you sensed the heavy burden of sin in your life? I myself have sensed the heaviness of when sin is upon my heart. The Holy Spirit is required by God to convict a person of sin, righteousness and judgment. Sometimes even our friends will stand aloof because of the sin that is in our lives.
We must not think for a moment that God overlooks sin in the life of one of His followers. Even the New Testament book of HEBREWS teaches us “For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and chastises every son whom He receives.” (12:6)
When a believer’s life is heavy with sin, believers should respond like Joshua did when the LORD discovered sin in the camp of the Israelites because Achan had hidden stolen goods under the rug in his tent. “Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face because God discovered that sin.” (Joshua 7:6)
Sin in our life as followers of Christ should cause you and me to cry out to the LORD, “I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin…do not forsake me, O LORD…make haste to help me….O LORD, my salvation!”
As the Psalmist believed that God would forgive him, the New Testament teaches followers of Christ that He will forgive our sins if we repent of them. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
As a follower of Christ do you need to acknowledge that you have sin in your heart? May you and I be heartbroken over our sins and cry out to the LORD Jesus Christ to forgive our sins and restore us to Himself.

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 37. This Psalm addresses the age-old problem of why the righteous suffer and yet the wicked prosper. As an older man, King David writes as the Holy Spirit leads him to help the followers of God to know that the wicked will have their day, which is not good. He also writes to encourage godly people to know that there are benefits in trusting in the LORD.
The first lesson that we learn is not to fret nor be envious of the wicked. Know this: to fret is easy if you and I are walking by sight and not by faith. Evil doers will one day be cast away. They will not last forever and neither will they not get away perpetually. Their pleasures are only temporary. In fact “the LORD laughs at them, for He sees that their day is coming.” (V. 13)
Living to please the LORD sets a believer free from fretting about what others have in this life. The Psalmist says to followers of Christ, “Trust in the LORD and do good.” He also teaches those of who love the LORD to “delight ourselves in the LORD.” Why? Because “the LORD will give you and me the desires of our heart.” (Vs. 3-4)
As you and I think about the life that the LORD has given us we must remember: “The footsteps of a man are established by the LORD, and He delights in His way.” (V. 23). King David knew that this was true in his young years and his olden days because he said “I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his seed begging bread.” (V. 25)
Therefore followers of the LORD Christ Jesus must delight in the LORD. We must commit our way to Him. We must rest in the LORD. And we must wait for the LORD. Why? Notice the blessings in verses 11, 18, 22, 29, and 34. The LORD blesses those who take refuge in Him.
The LORD is the solution to fretting about what others may have. Verse 16 teaches us that it “better is the little of the righteous than abundance of many wicked.” This world is temporary for believers in Christ. However the inheritance that the LORD gives to us will be forever. Our salvation is from the LORD.
My final word of thought is that followers of Christ’s conduct should reflect our theology of our belief in the LORD. The law of our God is in our hearts. The steps that He leads us in do not slip. (V. 31).
Have you committed your way to the LORD? Trust in Him and He will do for you what He did for King David and millions of others who have the salvation of righteousness that is from the LORD.

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 36. This Psalm is a contrast of the wickedness of man’s heart and the faithfulness of the love of the LORD God. David shows us the reality of sin and evil in a man’s heart. Then he praised the LORD for the character of God displayed by His great love.
Have you discovered the wickedness of your heart? Notice how the Scripture defines a wicked heart. “There is no fear of God before his eyes.” Flattery defies a man. It is hard for man to see sin in his life. Pride refuses to recognize it. The Bible further shows us that man ceases to act wisely and plots trouble while he is on his bed at night. Man does not reject evil.
In verses 1-4 the Psalmist shows us the depravity of a man’s heart. He says to us that the head and heart of sin is PRIDE. Notice what Jeremiah 17:9 says about a man’s heart: “The human heart is the most desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” (NLT)
There is a marked difference in perspective and morality of those who walk with Christ in their life. These verses teach a follower of Christ how distinctive the differences are. Rather than denying the reality of God, His followers take refuge in the shadow of His wings. Those who know the LORD begin so by being loved by Him. His mercy and lovingkindness makes a man’s heart upright with God.
The LOVE of the LORD is priceless. His love has no limits. His grace is available to all mankind. No matter how deep man’s sin takes him, the LORD can lift him up out of the bondages of sin. While sin can cause a man to sink into the depths of hell, the LORD can give a man eternal life in this life and eternally.
A man can determine the balance of his life as he knows the character of God. An apostle of Jesus Christ, John the son of Zebedee, reminds fellow believers in Christ that they can know that they are from God if you “have overcome them (the spirit of the antichrist), for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4, ESV)
Christ in the believer has victory because of the love of Christ! Is the LORD the first love of your life? God delights in those who are His servants.

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 35. What do you do when you receive injustices and become victims of those who would seek to destroy you? Sometimes the first thing that we want to do is to seek revenge on them. Well, this Psalm teaches the child of God that there is another way to respond without seeking revenge.
Historically David wrote this Psalm when he was seeking to hide from King Saul who wanted to kill him. The King knew that his days were numbered because the LORD had rescinded his kingship. David was a man after God’s own heart. Saul was jealous and envious of David.
David prayed in this Psalm that the LORD would deal with Saul and all of his people that were looking for him. David wanted God to contend with Saul. He even prayed that the LORD would put them to shame and dishonor who were seeking for his life. (V. 4) David said to the LORD that his enemies were dealing with him ‘without cause.’ He said that they were unjust in their ways.
One day the Son of God, who was also the son of David and heir to his throne was also “hated and accused without a cause.” (John 15:25) Jesus even at His death on the Cross asked His Father to forgive those who crucified Him because they did not know what they were doing. (Luke 23:34)
One thing that David wanted in the midst of his contending for him, he wanted to know that the LORD was his salvation. (V. 3) He wanted his enemies to be entangled in their own evil deeds. Out of it all David wanted to magnify the LORD.
In days of being spitefully used, hurt, persecuted, insulted and cursed at, you and I as followers of Christ must be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48) After all the injustices that we face, they are to test the character of God in our lives. We must love our enemies and pray for those who persecute you and me. Only God knows the reward that awaits us. And like David our greatest desire should be to magnify the LORD.
Max Lucado, one of my favorite authors, writes “When you face battles in life, write them in a prayer journal. Wait on the LORD, your defender and see what He does.”
Listen, do not have revenge! Love your enemies. Realize this truth: “God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?” Glorify the LORD and let Him be your defender!

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 34. Do you understand that God the LORD Jesus Christ wants us to know Him more than academically or intellectually? God engineers the life of His followers so that we can see Him at work in our lives.
David was running away from King Saul in fear of his life. He traveled in the land of the Philistines and they recognized him. So he started acting like a mad man and ran for his life from them too. (1 Samuel 21:10-15)
This 34th Psalm invites you and I to “taste and see that the LORD is good” (V. 8) all of our lives. The first 10 verses teach followers of Christ the LORD why we should feed on the LORD all of our days. To taste Him is more than a sip or a nip. Knowing the LORD is good as we walk with Him all the days of our lives. Our lives should praise Him because He saves us; He delivers us and rescues us in all of our difficult circumstances. He also satisfies us and protects us.
John Newton, a slave trader, found one day out on the sea aboard a ship that he wanted to “taste and see that the LORD is good!” In the lyrics that he wrote he said, “Was Grace that taught my heart to fear and Grace my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear the hour I first believed.” He experienced the salvation of the LORD that King David had experienced and the LORD changed his life.
In verses 11-21 the Bible teaches how to fear the LORD. Once we come to know Him as LORD and Savior, you and I will have no lack of anything. The LORD will not guard us so that we will never have heartaches and troubles. Learning to fear the LORD we will realize that in the midst of our troubles He will be with us. This is how you and I will grow in our intimacy with the LORD. Trust for the LORD is developed in us as we taste Him in the midst of being brokenhearted.
Max Lucado says it best in his own words, “One of the primary reasons God allows us to face adversity is so that He can demonstrate His faithfulness and in turn increase our faith.” He also said that we will never increase our faith in Christ the LORD without adversity in our lives.
Have ever faced a time of adversity? The psalmist teaches those who fear the LORD that “The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and He hears their cry.” (V. 15) Have you taken refuge in the LORD? Let Him redeem your soul today!

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 33. “Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits or it is becoming for the upright (the saved people).” (V. 1) Worship of God is man’s way to praise the LORD. It is a redeemed man’s way to increase our joy!
Worship: give thanks to the LORD; Sing praises to the LORD. Bring all musical instruments to praise Him; have skillfully trained people praise the LORD. Sing to Him with a new song. Sing an old song with new fervor. Worship the LORD to bring praise to the LORD for His character and His creation.
Why do followers of Christ need to praise the LORD? To thank Him for His providence. He is omnipotent. He is the creator. He is the redeemer. Remember the history of all His great deeds and wonders.
Worship the LORD! Why? Because He is sovereign. He frustrates the counsel of nations. He knows the hearts of every man of His creation. “The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations.” (V. 11) He looks down from heaven and sees all of the children of men. He is LORD and sits enthroned and fashions the hearts of men.
More reasons to worship the LORD! By the Word of the LORD He made the heavens and the earth. All stands firm because He is firmly standing as the foundation of all of His creation. Another reason to praise the LORD is because “the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His steadfast love and mercy.” (V. 18)
Are you fearful of war, disease, turmoil and uncertainty? This 33rd Psalm provides hope during seemingly hopeless times. When it seems that mankind has shaky plans, the LORD has sovereign plans. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” (V. 12) Worship Him with shouts of praise. The LORD knows all things!
After you and I have praised the LORD, “wait for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.” Then we must pray to the LORD, “Let your steadfast love, O LORD be upon us, even as we hope in you.” (V. 22)
If your hope is not in the LORD Jesus Christ, call upon Him today to be your Savior! Receive His full lovingkindness today!

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 32. There are two great confessional Psalms that deal with the issue of sin: chapters 32 and 51.
These Psalms talk directly about sin. In chapter 32 sin is defined as a transgression, sin and iniquity. Sin is missing the mark of God. Iniquity is twisting the law of God and transgression is seeing the posted signs of God and then walking directly over them.
Man today tries many ways to cover sin. Like Adam and Eve, people hide their sin. Another way to cover sin is to blame someone else for it. Jonah ran away from his sin. Some seek to persecute the reprover of sin. Others criticize the righteous to cover their sin. Yet others measure themselves by a weaker person.
King David teaches us in this chapter that there is only one way to cover sin: get forgiveness. He illustrated for us what happens when a person tries to hide their sin. Unconfessed sin has consequences. Even a person’s sin can bring emotional hurt when sin is not confessed. In fact doctors tell us that there is a connection between sin and sickness. Those who withhold the confession of sin can sometimes suffer terribly like David explained in verse 3 and 4.
Sin can cause a crisis in a person’s life. However in verse 1 the Bible teaches that sins that are confessed and forgiven can cause a person to be blessed by the LORD. God will not hold a person accountable for sins that He has forgiven. When God forgives sin, He remembers them no more. How can He do this? Because His forgiveness of sin is an accomplished fact.
An important lesson is found in this Psalm. Do not presume upon grace by putting off the confession of sin. God is available to all who call on Him for the forgiveness of their sin. The door of Grace is wide open for God’s forgiven of our sins. However to spurn the mercy of God is a serious matter. There will come a time when a person’s time will run out with God.
So the question for you and me is: How seriously do we take the matter of “sin”? Those who confess and repent of their sins, God will give them His unfailing love. He will give them righteousness and peace. Then a person can be glad and rejoice that they have been made righteous by God’s Son Jesus Christ who died on the Cross.
Have you been forgiven of your sins by God in Christ? Perhaps today is the day that you can be found by God and be forgiven of your sins. Cry out to Him today to forgive you of your sins.

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 31. Remember that some of the Psalms are prayers of lament. A lament is an address to God, a complaint or account of misery suffered, a plea for help, an affirmation of trust in God, and a statement of praising God. That is what we see in Psalm 31. King David was grieving and crying out to God. In this Psalm we can know that the LORD our God holds a powerful sway over the evil forces that seek to attack us.
Warren Wiersbe says that this Psalm can be summarized with three statements: When others do evil, trust God for His strength. Two, when others cause pain, ask God for His mercy. Three, When others see victory, give God the glory.
David declared his trust in the LORD. (Vs. 6, 14) He attests to the LORD’s deliverance. (Vs. 7-8, 21-22) Lastly he gives affirmation of God’s goodness as the basis of his trust. (V. 19)
Jesus in His dying hours, uttered the words of verse 5a to the God of Truth, “Father Into Your hands I commit my spirit.” David knew what it was to walk through the valley of the shadow of death. However for the LORD Jesus Christ, knew that the God of Truth would not save Him from death but out of death through the Resurrection.
I believe that this Psalm of lament teaches believers in Christ today that we must have total commitment to the LORD. This happens because we believe in the total sovereignty of God. It is His prerogative to bless those who trust and obey Him.
Remember what God told Moses to say to Aaron and his sons, that they should bless the people of Israel, “The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. So shall they put My name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.” (Numbers 6:22-27, ESV)
Total commitment says, LORD, “My times are in your hand.” (V. 15) This should be true of every follower of Christ today whether we face evil, pain, or see others see victory. The life the LORD gives us carries responsibilities and also gives us a life full of possibilities.
Through it all, as we learn to ‘trust in Jesus Christ,’ the LORD will provide for us, like He did David, protection and His presence. Being in His presence means that a personal relationship with the LORD is imperative at all times. Our time with the LORD is precious because He is our God. He guards the faithful and He makes marvelous His mercy and lovingkindness.
Have you experienced the salvation of the LORD Jesus Christ? He wants to be your Savior. He wants to hide you in the secret place of His presence. (V. 20) Call on Him today!

02/11/2025

A LONG THOUGHT from the Holy Bible’s Old Testament from the Book of THE PSALM, chapter 30. Do you experience the favor of the LORD Jesus Christ? This ought to be the heart cry of every follower of Jesus Christ.
This Psalm helps true followers of the LORD to know that there can be different extremes in life. Wailing, dancing, sackcloth and joy and sometimes sickness to the brink of death. The Psalmist knew where his help would come from during the extremes of life. He said, “O LORD, I cried to You for help and you have healed me.” (V. 2)
When followers of Christ experience the good and the bad in life, we must be willing to “exalt” the LORD. To “exalt” means that we must lift Him high. Though we cannot lift the LORD higher than He is, we must always acknowledge the greatness of the LORD.
Whether the heartaches of our life are through times of testing that the LORD allows or because we have been disobedient to the LORD, He has mercy for us and will heal us and forgive us. Followers of the LORD must “sing praises to the LORD…and give thanks to His holy name!”
Sometimes in our lives as followers of the LORD we may sense His anger for our disobedience. However we must remember that “His anger is but for a moment, and His favor is for a lifetime! Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” (V. 5) The Apostle Paul writes it this way, “For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)
As a follower of the LORD Jesus Christ, do you need the security of your relationship with Him? Have trials, sickness and nearness of death held a grip on your life? Sometimes your prayers may seem to not be heard, as if God has hidden His face from you. This could even lead you and me to be dismayed.
So remember what the Psalmist said on days like this, “‘I shall never be moved.’ By your favor, O LORD, you made my mountain (circumstances good or bad) stand strong…To you, O LORD, I cry and to the LORD I plead for mercy; You turned for me my mourning into dancing; you have loosed my sackcloth (for days of mourning) and clothed me with gladness…O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever.” (Vs. 6-12)
Why don’t you and I just praise the LORD and give Him a shout of “GLORY!” His goodness and mercy are new everyday. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise the Name of the LORD. Sing to the LORD, How Great Thou art!
