Welcome to the page for the Chickasawhatchee Cemeteries Project in Sasser, Georgia. Located on Sasser-Herod Road, there are 2 cemeteries, one Methodist and one Baptist, which were part of a small village called Chickasawhatchee. Phase I begins with a professional work crew will clear the major debris which has completely taken over the cemeteries. More details are on the way for Phases 2 and 3. Please read your local Dawson News for the latest updates as well as this page. For Phase 4, a Chickasawhatchee Cemeteries Book will be published which will include the history of the Chickasawhatchee Village and names of early settlers. Per Cherry Howell in a recent Dawson News article, "proceeds from the sale of this publication will be used to fund future cleanups needed for the cemeteries and to purchase a marker commemorating the historic Village of Chickasawhatchee". Interested in volunteering with the cleanup and preservation project? Interested in making a monetary donation for this project? Checks may be mailed to the following addresss:*

Thank you for your continued interest in the Chickasawhatchee Methodist Church and Baptist Church Cemeteries located where the historic village of Chickasawhatchee once stood. We had a setback when hurricane Michael reeked havoc on the Methodist Church Cemetery. Thirteen large trees were uprooted or broken. Damaging several gravesites. In October of 2019 we were able to have the trees cut into smaller pieces and removed to a location outside of the Cemetery. If weather permits I hope to have another cleanup day in early spring. More information will be posted later. If you are interested in helping please let me know. Thanks.

Cleanup of the historic Chickasawhatchee Cemeteries will resume on Sat. April 22. If you would like to help, volunteers will begin gathering about 8:30-9:00 but if that does not work for you, come when you can and work as long as you like. We will concentrate on clearing bushes and underbrush. Bring tools of your choice: Chain Saw, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, rake, clippers, shovel, w**d eater, etc. Wear old clothes and shoes. Cemeteries are located on the Sasser/Herod Highway, 2 1/2 miles from Sasser on the left. Watch for signs. Come out and help preserve history. Send me an email if you have questions. Cherry
