Memorial Day - once known as Decoration Day - is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving our country. Let us all be reflective of the huge price they paid for our freedom.

For Addison Street Church this Memorial Day is personal, we lost one of our heroes this year - Bryan McCarty.

Obituary:
Long Time Kiwanian Member Rev. George A. Rice passed away peacefully on Sunday evening with his family around him. Rev. Rice was a member of Kiwanis for 55 years, a Chicago Police chaplain, Pastor of Addison Street Church, Board Member of the Ravenswood - Lake View Historical Association, founder and President of the Friends of Lake View High School ( his alma mater) and the Friends of the Conrad Sulzer Regional Library. He was an advocate of young people having begun his ministry as a Youth Minister. He was a founding member of the Lake View Council of Religious Action, Chaplain at the House of Good Shepherd, active in the Gospel League which ran a shelter for the homeless, involved in the Grand Army of the Republic which spon-sored the Memorial Day events at Graceland in which George involved the Lake View and Lane Tech ROTCs and marching bands. The street in front of the church is named after him and the three story building across the street from the church is the Reverend George and Marilyn Rice Center. There are not enough words to re-count a life long commitment to serving the people of Chicago. He was a friend to all, put many a person on the right path, cared for the disenfranchised, organized parades and spaghetti dinners, raised funds for worthwhile causes, fought for what is right. There was only one Rev. George Rice, he will be missed as much as he was loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Marilyn (Longo) Rice, his loving children Rev. Gary (Joan) Schroeder, Barbara (Samuel) Suitca and Marilyn Ann Rice, his devoted grandchildren Stacy (Clay) Mahaffey, Matthew (Cynthia) Schroeder, Samuel (Megan) Suitca, Daniel and Robert Suitca, Scott, Joseph and Thomas Helton, his loving great grandchildren Addison and Sarah Schroeder, Nick Simonetti, David, Turner, Claire Mahaffey, and Kane, Lauren, Samuel, Camille Suitca.

It comes over all of us at some point, yet we've got to fight it. Don't neglect the gathering of yourselves. It's biblical. Hebrews 10:24-25.

Is skipping church whenever we feel like really no big deal?
