Very useful information.... The following table shows a huge number of manuscripts which contain different chapters of extravagantes. Chapter 47 is what historically some manuscripts contained the gloss which had the blasphemous "our lord god the pope". A useful tool for medieval manuscript researchers.

This one is a bit out of my price range for what I'd like to invest in....but if there is any SDA out there who would like to own an impressive piece of history, this is probably one of the most monumental works on the waldenses in 17th century history. Moreland's work and his collections of sermons by Jon Leger was historic and the interlinear for the Cambridge and TCD prose is critical to unlocking those manuscripts. I've used the online versions at GB and Archive many times for this work. It also has some beautiful maps for the period in it. I would probably buy it if it was closer to 1,000 myself. However, 2,000 is not bad for the work. They handle the Italian export license at this shop from what I'm told. The wait period for export is around 30 days minimum. Assuming the Italian government approves the export.

Do we have any prose from the Waldenses themselves discussing the Sabbath directly? Sadly much was destroyed and what evidence remains is mostly polemic. The primary prose at Trinity completely destroys the critics claims that they were not anabaptist in their positions on infant baptism and religious liberty. In regards to the sabbath, the evidence is mixed. These sermons were collections obtained by Samuel Moreland from the waldensian minister Jon Leger who was from the 17th century. They are not entirely of ancient origin. Obviously by that point in time the waldenses were already heavily influenced by presbyterians having their forefathers destroyed by crusades. This particular sermon in question is a commentary on the ten commandments. It does read as the third commandment instead of the fourth and does perhaps show some influence of flux. Though it does quite clearly state "the seventh day" with the number 7 featured below in the images. Quoting from MS 260 folios 208v to 210v However, here is the translation.

"They that will keep and observe the Sabbath of Christians that is to say to sanctify the day of the Lord must be careful of four things The first is to cease from all earthly and worldly labours the second not to sin the third not to be idle in regard to good works the fourth to do those things that are for the benefit of the soul Of the first it is said Six days thou shalt labour and do all thy work but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God in it thou shalt not do any work And in Exodus it is said Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore for it is holy unto you every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death And in Numbers we read that one of the children of Israel being seen to gather sticks on the Sabbath day was brought to Moses who not knowing what course to pursue in the matter the Lord said unto Moses The man shall be surely put to death all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp And all the congregation brought him without the camp and stoned him with stones and he died God wished that the Sabbath be kept with such reverence that the children of Israel would not dare on that day to gather the manna which was given from heaven. The second cause is to preserve ourselves from sin as it is said in Exodus Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy that is that thou observe it by It keeping thyself carefully from sin and therefore saith Saint Augustine is better to labour and to dig the earth on the Lord's day than to be drunk or to commit any other sins for sin is a servile work by which a man serves the devil Again he says that it is better to labour with profit than to roam abroad in idleness for the day of the Lord was not ordained to the end that a man should cease from earthly good works and give himself unto sin but to the end he should addict himself to spiritual labours which are better than earthly and that the whole Sabbath throughout he reform himself of those sins he has committed for idleness teaches all evil Seneca declares it is the sepulchre of a living man. The fourth thing is to do that which is profitable to the soul as to think on God devoutly to pray to him diligently to hear his commandments and his holy doctrine to give thanks to God for all his benefits to instruct the ignorant to correct the erroneous and to preserve ourselves from all sin to the end that saying of Esay may be accomplished Cease to do evil learn to do well for rest is not good if it be not accompanied with good works."

I should have looked for the reference to almond milk....oh well, next deep dive.... Some say this was from a belief in gnosticism....but coming from the inquisitors, I'm cautious....

Reminds me of the idea some express: "if it has a mommy or a daddy, we don't eat it"......or "if it has a face, I don't taste"....

Vatican library CRACKED again!! I searched around to see if they had anything from Reinerius (see previous post) in their archives and the problem is his name was often spelled in different ways. In their library it is spelled Raynerius....but while they do not have his summa contra vvaldenses digitized, they do have his "summa contra cathari" wherein the Waldenses are mentioned as the pauperes of lugdeno (poor of lyons).

There appear to be two manuscripts with this document including Vat.lat.3978 and Reg.lat.428. Folks these are OLD primary manuscripts.... In the former, there is a usage of the name Insabbatati which is thought to be a reference to sabbath keeping for the Valdesi and in the latter, there are the statements referencing Sylvester similar to his summa contra vvaldenses and the reference to the chain of those who feared God in the remnant just like The Great Controversy narrative.

There is also a remark about rejecting infant baptism which completely and utterly destroys the claims by answering adventism and others that the waldenses were not proto-anabaptists....they most certainly were.

Adventism stands vindicated.....

Last night another vatican manuscript got cracked....but before I show that document...here is a bit of a backstory. This 12th century apostate Raynerius Sacchoni was once a Cathar himself who later became an inquisitor and persecuted his former brethren. He enumerated reasons why the Waldenses were so dangerous including their antiquity as follows:

"First, because it is older; some say that it has existed from the time of Sylvester and others from the time of the apostles."

"Second, because it is more general; for there is scarcely any country in which this Sect is not."

"The third, because, while all other Sects excite the abhorrence of their hearers by the outrageousness of their blasphemies against God, this (namely of the Leonists) has a great appearance of piety; and they believe all things concerning God, and which are contained in the creed, rightly only they blaspheme the Romish Church which blasphemy a great multitude of the Laity are easily induced to believe. And, as we read in the Book of Judges, that Samson's foxes had different faces, but their tails tied together, so the heretics are divided into Sects among themselves, but in attacking the Church they are united. When there are, in one house, heretics of three Sects, of which each condemns the other, each one at the same time attacks the Romish Church and thus these crafty little foxes destroy the vineyard of the Lord, that is the Church, by their errors.”
