On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the lives lost and hold all who mourn in prayer.

In the days following 9/11, our global Lutheran partners shared words of prayer and solidarity:

"We join you in the spiritual battle and prayer for forgiveness and love knowing that the battle is not ours but God's, and that the truth and God's victory will always prevail." —LWF Regional Office for Africa (Kenya)

"May there be ways to comfort the mourners as well as the survivors, and may the church be part of that work. May all the deceased rest in peace." —Church of Sweden

"Your pain is our pain. We were shocked to watch this unprecedented act of violence and terrorism. We therefore share your sadness and sorrow for the loss of so many innocent lives." —Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan

"May God help us resist the forces of evil and spread peace in the world." —Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine

St. Matthew's sends Happy Birthday wishes to Pastor Jarrod !

Yes, it’s a long post, but it needs to be shared.

The last 24 hours have been challenging for Rowan County’s emergency response community—and for the families, agencies, and individuals affected by the various events that have unfolded.

During incidents, information moves quickly. Unfortunately, as details pass through radio traffic, scanner reports, social media, and word of mouth, pieces of information can become incomplete, misunderstood, or unintentionally distorted. A single radio transmission or isolated report rarely tells the full story of what is happening on the ground.

While we cannot share every detail from the past 24 hours, we do want to provide a few updates and, more importantly, ask our community for a little compassion and understanding.

A structure fire in the West Rowan community left a family without a home. Multiple agencies responded, including departments from outside their districts and mutual aid partners from beyond Rowan County. During the incident, a Mayday was transmitted but was quickly canceled because of the swift, courageous, and coordinated actions of the crews operating on scene.

Three firefighters were injured and transported for evaluation from separate aspects of the fire. Thankfully, none sustained life-threatening injuries. One of those firefighters was a mutual aid firefighter from another agency who had come to help protect our community. We are incredibly grateful for every firefighter and department that answered the call, crossing district and county lines to help.

On Interstate 85, a China Grove fire engine was struck while crews were working another motor vehicle collision. The apparatus sustained significant damage, but thankfully, our personnel are safe. The engine had been strategically positioned as a protective barrier, and it did exactly what it was intended to do—shield and protect the people working ahead of it.

These incidents are reminders of the risks our emergency responders face every time they leave their homes, families, and loved ones to answer a call. They work in smoke, fire, traffic, darkness, uncertainty, and heartbreak—often without knowing what they will encounter until they arrive.

Unfortunately, death/fatalities have not been a stranger to our county as a whole over the past 24 hours. The circumstances have varied and for those in emergency services, death is unfortunate part of the world we work in. But there is a difference when those calls come one after another, with very little time in between to process one before the next tones drop. That is the heaviness of the last 24 hours.

Those who work in emergency services understand that difficult circumstances are never far from the work we do. Knowing that does not make these moments easier. Some days simply leave a deeper mark than others. Today is one of those days.

Behind every uniform is a person.

A person with a family, friends, worries, memories, and emotions. Our responders may appear strong and composed, but that does not mean they are unaffected by what they see, hear, and experience. Many are carrying the weight of these past 24 hours while still preparing themselves to answer the next call.

So, if you see a firefighter, EMT, paramedic, telecommunicator, law enforcement officer, emergency management professional, or any other emergency responder today, please be kind. Share a smile. Offer a word of encouragement. Give them a little grace. You may never know what they have just walked away from—or what they are carrying with them as they walk into the next call.

We also ask that you help us by sharing only factual information from trusted sources. Even when listening to radio traffic, individual transmissions cannot provide the full story. Our personnel must first respond, assess the situation, protect life, and address the needs directly in front of them. There are also times when, to protect the privacy, dignity, and well-being of those involved, we simply cannot share every detail.

Today, more than anything, please keep our emergency responders, the families affected by these incidents, the agencies that responded alongside us, and our entire community in your thoughts and prayers.

Compassion matters. Patience matters. Kindness matters.

Be kind to one another. Check on your neighbors. Support the people around you. Some days are heavier than they appear, and sometimes the smallest act of kindness can mean more than we will ever know.
