Sunago 2025: Loving the Liturgy
Guest speaker: Dr. John Bombaro

Disciple-making and disciple-formation belong to the Church. Jesus made these treasures her possession, with no option to parcel them off to other organizations. This is due to the fact that the Lord Jesus bequeathed to the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church the stewardship of the Word of God and the sacraments. Put differently, Jesus committed to the Church His speaking, His Spirit, His presence, His self-giving, and His rule or, in sum, His liturgy for the express purpose of saving and sanctifying humanity, so that human beings may once again “glorify God and enjoy him forever,” as well as serve their neighbor. Christ’s liturgical legacy constitutes the essential life of each disciple and the purpose of the Church herself.

Loci 2025: The Parables of Jesus

The parables are fascinating and full of deep divine meaning. Jesus took His examples from the everyday lives of his disciples (shepherding, fishing, baking, farming) and told stories full of drama (a man attacked by robbers and left for dead, lost things being found, houses being threatened by storms). Through His parables, Jesus invited His disciples to experience His teaching in narrative form. The messages of the parables were often subversive, challenging the official “orthodoxies” of his own day. Today they are often misunderstood, especially by unbelievers, whose hearts and minds are closed to Christ’s teaching. But for faithful disciples of Jesus, whose hearts and minds have been illuminated by the Holy Spirit, the parables are a true treasure, revealing the mysteries of God.

We meet at 10:30 AM for Matins, followed by the presentation from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with an hour's break for lunch (BYO).

Sunago 2024: Christianus Sum
October 4–6 at Camp Monroe

“… And in Antioch the disciples were for the first time called Christians.” — Acts 11:26

Christianus Sum, “I am Christian.” For many, the word “Christian” is merely an adjective, describing one aspect of their earthly lives. People label themselves “Christian” because that is the religion they have chosen for themselves. But for the Christians in Antioch and for the martyrs, who surrendered their lives with the confession of Christ on their lips, Christianus Sum was so much more than an adjective or a label. It was a statement of identity forged in communion with Christ. It not only described their life; it was their lives. Being a Christian is more fundamental than personal names, families, ethnicities, or nations; it is more essential to our being than careers or economic status. At Christ’s altar these things are left behind and forgotten as we receive a new identity. We are Christians.

Rev. Dr. James Bushur will be our featured speaker. Dr. Bushur serves as the Carl and Erna Weinrich Professor of New Testament and Early Church Studies, and Director of Deaconess Formation at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Loci 2024
Reclaiming a Theology of the Body:
Our Flesh, the Flesh of Christ, and What It All Means

Contemporary theologians and philosophers have said that the defining issue of our time is anthropology—the question of what it means to be human. Both in society and in the church, there is confusion about the human being and the body. A faulty understanding of anthropology bleeds over into everything else. From questions of sexuality and gender, technology and transhumanism, life issues and what we do with the dead, all of them circle around the question of the personal body. From the beginning, the church has faced challenges to understanding the body properly. Such perennial misunderstandings of the body are on full display today and require us to reclaim a biblical theology of the body, grounded in Christ, who took on flesh and inaugurates a new body paradigm and incorporates us into its very pattern. Join us this year as we dig into the wonders of the body and of Christ’s body, using John Kleinig’s book Wonderfully Made: A Protestant Theology of the Body as our guide.

Loci 2022: The Smalcald Articles of Dr. Martin Luther

Commissioned by Elector John Frederick as a clear and uncompromising response to Roman Catholic errors and written by Luther at a time he believed he was at death’s door, the Smalcald Articles (1538) stand as Martin Luther’s theological “last will and testament.” More than that, they serve as one of our confessional documents and are still useful to us today in identifying and refuting the errors of Rome. In the almost 500 years since this document was first published, what has changed in the Roman Catholic Church? What has remained the same? What errors have crept also into other denominations? How should we as Lutherans respond in the twenty-first century? All these questions and more will be addressed in this year’s Loci gatherings.

Join us at 10:30 AM at for Matins, followed by the presentation from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with an hour break for lunch (BYO). We meet at All Saints Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC.
