It’s springtime at the Joel Tigler Scout Hut and Troop 99 has been busy with some Eagle Scout projects. We constructed community garden beds, built and installed a storage shed at the SAPC playground and did landscaping improvements on the SAPC campus. We are proud of our Scouts’ leadership in service!

Bill Maine was a lifelong Scouter, a friend of Troop 99 and a familiar face at our meetings. For many years he led Eagle Scout Boards for our Scouts. He was our unit commissioner as far back as the 1980’s.

Troop 99 has lost a piece of its history. Bob Hormberg, a longtime member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church and the father of two Troop 99 Eagle Scouts passed away on September 29, 2025. Bob was a great supporter of Troop 99. He was the driving force behind the construction of the Joel Tigler Scout Hut in the late 1980's. Bob loved teaching Scouting skills and conducting mock Eagle boards. Even late in his life, Bob was always eager to hear updates on how the troop was doing and where we were going next. He will be greatly missed by his family and fondly remembered by SAPC and Troop 99.

The Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church community came through with a truck load of disaster relief items for our neighbors in western North Carolina. Then Troop 99 was offered the opportunity to load the truck last night. This stuff is just the tip of the iceberg of what's going to be needed over the next few months as the region comes to grip with the devastation that the hurricane brought. Please continue to find ways to give and to serve.

I worked with Chris for a couple of summers at Camp Grimes back in the early ‘80’s. He was a great person and a good friend. This is a nice remembrance of him for Memorial Day. - JB.

This Life Scout whose Eagle Scout brother died in the Persian Gulf War reminds us that Memorial Day should be a day of reverence, not a big sales day.
