I See A Crimson Stream of Blood
A Non Violent and Sacramental Reflection on The Assassination Attempt of Former President Donald Trump
The great hymnologist and preacher GT Haywood poured forth his devotion to the cross of Jesus in his masterpiece “I see A Crimson Stream of Blood. This morning during Mass I stretched my hands over the chalice to consecrate the wine that the Spirit would turn to our Lord’s blood and beheld in my heart the blood flowing down Donald Trump's cheek at his rally yesterday.
I’d like to reflect first on Trump's blood. The hardcore bottom line is that it should never have been there. Violence in response to his thirst for a retribution-centric America is the antithesis of the gospel.
My second thought in this regard is neither should have the bloodshed he has caused.
- Woman have shed blood because their bodies no longer matter.
-Trans people have shed blood because they are pathologized as the embodiment of disorder.
-The poor have shed blood and been rendered breathless
- People of color have shed blood as their dehumanized history has been amplified.
The list is long.
I see a crimson stream of blood that flowed long before yesterday.
The second flowing of blood is on the cross of our Savior made real in the sacrifice of the Holy Mass. You see the blood of Jesus should have been the last stream shed, but the cycle of violence and blame keeps on slaughtering.
In this hour we need the blood of Jesus that drips from the mercy-filled chalice of his heart. He is calling us from and to the table of the Eucharist to recognize the unjust quality of sinful bloodshed and to remind us that bloodshed is not aligned with his. One drowns its victims in underserved pain and places them under the executing power of the empire, the other crushes the head of the soul serpent of hatred.
I see a crimson stream of blood that is bu****it and I see one that will heal the fractured heart of this nation.
Which will we choose?
May we internalize his sacred blood and become like him.
