The story revealed in "In His Very Steps" is still unfolding. In fact, over the last several years I have I felt guilty because I have allowed my faith to be shaken. With this in mind, I was greatly encouraged by my reading of Abraham's and Sarah's first visit to Egypt in Genesis 12 and 13. In chapter 12, I read:

"As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarah, 'I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you'” (Gen 12:11-13, NIV).

Reflecting upon this passage, Matthew Henry wisely notes, "The grace Abram was most noted for, was faith; yet he thus fell through unbelief and distrust of the Divine providence, even after God had appeared to him twice. Alas, what will become of weak faith, when strong faith is thus shaken!"

This story is great encouragement for devoted Christians today. Even those who are strong in their faith remain human and thus are still prone to sin. Life is hard and we may become distracted by the world around us counter to the faith we boldly profess. This is a good illustration of what the writer of the Hebrews, in chapter two, described as "drifting away."

The cure to moments where we drift is to "pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard" (Hebrews 2:1). This should be a daily priority in our walk with the Lord.

Prayer: Thank You Lord for Your merciful grace and forgiveness. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for reminding us of our need to flee sinful ways and return to the peace and tranquility of an obedient life. Amen.

I opened the door to the apartment this morning to have my quiet time. As time began to pass, I noticed that the sound of the morning crickets and song birds were missing. Other than the wind rustling through the trees, everything was silent.

That fact induced me to realize that soon, even the evenings will be silenced by cold weather. And so it occurred to me that we are living in a spiritually silent world -- a cold and dark world. Yet we we who know the grace and mercy of Jesus; we who regularly call on the name of the Lord in faith through prayer, and some of us who have been called to proclaim the Gospel, have allowed the culture of our day – the media, the court, public opinion, and political correctness to cool our passion for Christ to the point that we too are silent.

Certainly we are better than crickets, birds, and frogs! Certainly we can sing the glories of Christ, even though all the world around us be frigid and dark. Indeed, we should repent and allow our voices to shake up the airways, social media, and our daily conversations to that others can come to know and enjoy the love of Christ Jesus.

The Great Commission demands that we NOT BE SILENT!

"How Has America Reached This Point?"

As a child, I attended public school where I stood with my hand over my heart each morning and recited the pledge of allegiance. It was a solemn moment for me, because I was a proud American. Following this simple lesson in patriotism, we were always led in a morning prayer - a prayer that closed with the words, “In Jesus’ name, Amen.” Even before I accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of my life, I recognized that patriotism, morality, obedience to authorities, and Godliness went hand in hand.

Forty plus or minus years later, I am filled with grief and sorrow at the demise of our nation. Prayer has been removed from public schools, God is no longer mentioned as part of the pledge of allegiance, teachers and police officers are no longer figures of authority worthy of respect. Worse of all, patriotism and a unified sense of right and wrong has all but disappeared.

What happened? When did the world become so “tolerant” of discord and disunity? At what point did it become acceptable to destroy property and disobey the law simply because we are angry? When did it become common-practice to respond with violence because someone else was violent? How has America reached this point?

I was reading in the Bible recently and came across a possible answer. In the book of James I read: “For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16, NIV).

As it so often does, the Bible accurately described our national (and perhaps international) dilemma - we have become a national of disorder and virtually every evil practice imaginable. At the heart of the problem we find anger, bitterness, jealously, envy, murder, depression, and more. All of these are interrelated evils.

Discontent with our position and possessions often indicates a self-centered attitude which leads to intolerant, resentful, and even malicious feelings toward a real or imagined rival. America has not only reached this point, we have crossed far, far over the line. We covet the success of others, we ascribe to the personalities of amoral men and women, and we long for material possessions, good looks, or the position or power of others. Alas, in order to compensate for a frustration in not having what we want or having our way, we make unkind and destructive remarks and submerge ourselves in self-pity, anger, bitterness, and depression. Within the pages of the Bible, we find that Cain envied Abel because Abel’s offering was accepted by God while Cain’s was not. Cain became jealous, coveting what had been denied him (Genesis 4:3–8). The Scripture describes a situation where anger, bitterness, depression, and murder followed. Similarly, envy, jealousy, and selfish-ambition motivated Lucifer to rebel against God. The prophet Isaiah writes: “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. . . . I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13–14).

The apostle Paul gives the all-time antidote to the sins we face in America today. He wrote, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12–13). I was recently very inspired in my own life by realizing that there was a time in the Apostle Paul’s life when he was also discontented with life - and he too had to “learn” to be content.

With all this in mind, what can like-minded people do to help solve the problems facing our nation today. There is no doubt as many suggestions as there are stars in the nighttime sky. In my humble opinion, the answer is two fold: look within, and read the Bible.

First, every man, woman, and child; every ordinary citizen and every leader in positions of authority, should look within by accepting that none of us are perfect. Recognizing this will help us break our vicious lines of thinking by focusing on the real causes for of our problems - SIN, rather than casting blame (or throwing stones and pulling triggers) on other people, circumstances, “bad luck,” a lack of acceptance, or failures to “get ahead.” Simple said, we should develop a mind-set that will enable us to face issues individually, in harmony with others, and with humility.

Second, I strongly believe that the Bible offers the solution to every problem faced by every man, woman, and child; every family, and at every level of government. Thus, we should all read the Word of God - the Bible. It has been said that it is the best selling yet most unread book in the world. But read it we must - and not only read it, but study it to dig out its truths for a nation that is collapsing under our own success and failure. Referring to the Bible, Dwight L. Moody is quoted as saying: “Either sin will keep you from this Book, or this Book will keep you from sin.”

Use the Bible to search for texts that speak to the problems we face, then praying over the answers we find; asking God to reinforce their truth. God’s Word brings conviction, but also relief, as we learn to obey it.

There is a principle in counseling known as “put off—put on.” Simply said, to solve the problems of life one must learn to “put off” thoughts and actions that result in difficulties, stress, and turmoil, and “put on” (or replace with) habits that will lead to different results. It is a simple yet profound summary of how to solve the problems our nation currently faces. The Apostle Paul spoke in similar terms when he encouraged the troubled city of Phillipi with these words:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).

What does the Bible say about the need for Christians to live "perfect lives"? Allow me to share a quote from a devotion by Jennifer Benson Shultz:

"Being open about our struggles puts us on the same level with every other human alive—which is right where we belong! However, BECAUSE OF JESUS CHRIST, OUR SIN WILL NOT FOLLOW US INTO ETERNITY. It’s like the old saying goes, “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven” (ODB August 4, 2016, emphasis added).

What Does the Bible Say About Say When Life IS Hard
Deuteronomy 31:6

Almost everyone has had days, months, or even years when life was hard, and seemed to be getting harder instead of easier. We spend time believing things will get better, hoping things will improve, and praying for relief, but the next day or month just brings more heartache and disappointment.

My wife and I have lived through such seasons before. In fact, I believe we are in the midst of such right now. It has been a long time since I felt like I was living the so-called "good life." Don't misunderstand me, I consider myself to be a blessed man. I was reminded of that last weekend when I celebrated Father's Day in between sales appointments that were either forgotten or canceled at the door. Spending time with my grown children, enjoying the time we had, and watching them interact with their own children, firmly reminded me that money and things do not define a man.

When life just doesn't seem hard, but it is ACTUALLY HARD, the best person to turn to is God - through prayer and in the name of Jesus Christ. To further help, the best place to go is church where we can be reminded of God's love, mercy, and grace. Added to these, the best book to open is the Bible; there we will find how others handled their own versions of the same thing we find ourselves dealing with.

This morning I found myself reading in Deuteronomy and I came across the following verse: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deut. 31:6, NIV). I paused to reflect over each word. They clanged to me as if God was speaking them directly to my heart and mind. "Be strong and courageous." "Do not be afraid." "l will never leave you." I could not help but pick up my iPad and pen the impact of these phrases upon me — and the comfort and relief they offered me. I felt that I had to write this down and share it with as many people as I could this morning.

From this one verse, three phrases, and God's very-real Holy Spirit, I have been encouraged this morning by four lessons. I want to keep this very short and simple so you will read the every word. Thus, allow me to suggest that you remember four principles that can encourage and inspire you to press on today:

1. Remember that your CHARACTER should always be stronger than your
CIRCUMSTANCES.

You and I may not be able to control what happens to us today (or tomorrow), but we can control how we respond. Paul's message to the church at Thessolonica comes to mind as I say this: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thess. 5:16-18). If you take nothing else away from that verse, let it be in ALL circumstances.

2. Remember that your STRUGGLES always lead to STRENGTH.
No matter what situation or struggle you face today - big or small, it is something that God can use to produce more strength, faith and perseverance in you. That is, if you let Him! Again, Paul's wisdom springs to mind: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose"
(Romans 8:28). I currently have 26 students who could benefit from this reminder.

3. Remember that GOD'S TIMING is always PERFECT.
God's plans are usually different from our plans. The Lord isn't limited by our understanding and vision of how things should be. Rather, His plans are always perfect! Patience and trust are what comes to mind when I recite my life verse: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord; "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). And finally:

4. Remember that God will NEVER leave your side.
Allow this verse in Deuteronomy, and it's New Testament reminder in Hebrews 13:5, to sustain you that no matter what you are going through; God is with you! You are not alone. This has been true from the moment you asked Jesus to bring you into His family, and it will be this way if you pause right now and ask Him to accept you as His redeemed child.

"Be strong and courageous" today, those who read these words. "Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Father, thank You for the love You shower on us day by day, week by week, and year by year. Convict us this week to study your word so that we will love as You taught us to love - and to care for others because You cared enough to send us Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Open our eyes to see the needs of others and to respond as You want us to respond because Christ lives in us. Amen.

It happens to everyone from time to time; we face a struggle, a loss, a disappointment, or something. In every case, the solution is the same. Cry out to Jesus for help. Such is what Peter did when he found himself sinking into the sea. His a simple but effective prayer, "Lord, save me" (Mat. 14:30) was all it took. God will always take compassion on us no matter what we have done, no matter what our situation may be, and no matter how weak our faith may be during the trials of life.

Today is Halloween... Many Christians argue that the pagan roots of this annual holiday are no more significant than the pagan origins of Christmas or other church festivals. Without doubt, the church has progressively Christianized the calendar, seizing secular and pagan holidays as opportunities for Christian witness and celebration. Such should be our approach to Halloween. While affirming that make-believe and imagination are part and parcel of God’s gift of imagination, Christians should be very concerned about the focus of that imagination and creativity. Arguing against Halloween is not equivalent to arguing against Christmas. The old church festival of “All Hallow’s Eve” is by no means as universally understood among Christians as the celebration of the incarnation at Christmas.

With these facts in minds, Christian parents should make careful decisions based on a biblically-informed Christian conscience. Some Halloween practices are clearly out of bounds, others may be strategically transformed, but this takes hard work and may meet with mixed success.

Today, the arrival of Halloween is a good time for Christians to remember that evil spirits are real and that the Devil will seize every opportunity to trumpet his own celebrity. Perhaps the best response to the Devil at Halloween is that offered by Martin Luther, the great Reformer: “The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him for he cannot bear scorn.” With this in mind, the best Christian response to Halloween might be to scorn the Devil and then pray for the Reformation of Christ’s church on earth. Let’s put the dark side on the defensive.

We live in a world that worships the immediate. When it seems there is no sign of our deepest longings being fulfilled, the Bible urges us to cling to the eternal God. “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14).

Learning to be patient is not easy, but it is essential for a more abundant life.
