Join us on Easter Sunday! Breakfast and the egg-hunt are at 9:30, Divine Service is at 11am.

"Are there any who are devout lovers of God?
Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival!

Are there any who are grateful servants?
Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord!

Are there any weary with fasting?
Let them now receive their wages!

If any have toiled from the first hour,
let them receive their due reward;
If any have come after the third hour,
let him with gratitude join in the Feast!
And he that arrived after the sixth hour,
let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss.
And if any delayed until the ninth hour,
let him not hesitate; but let him come too.
And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour,
let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.
For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.
He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour,
as well as to him that toiled from the first.

To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.
He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor.
The deed He honors and the intention He commends.
Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!

First and last alike receive your reward;
rich and poor, rejoice together!
Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!
You that have kept the fast, and you that have not,
rejoice today for the Table is richly laden!" -St. John Chrysostom's Easter Homily

Today (March 25) the Church keeps The Annunciation of Our Lord: the day the Son of God took flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary for our salvation.

This day reminds us of how great the love of God is toward us. The Creator enters His creation. He takes our humanity as His own, so that He can heal it, restore it, and make it new.

As we head toward Holy Week, we pause and consider that the One conceived in Mary’s womb is the One who will carry our sin to the cross, lie in the tomb, and rise in victory. The Incarnation is not a side note. It is the beginning of the saving work that reaches its visible climax at Calvary and Easter.

That is what it means that Christ renews us from the inside out. He gives a heart of flesh in place of a heart of stone. He brings us out of the ways of the world that lead to corruption and death, and He begins to transform us by the renewing of our minds in Him.

Annunciation Day calls us into this new life: die to sin and arise to live with Christ in His righteousness and purity. Not by our own strength, but by His Word and Spirit. In your vocations, in ordinary burdens and ordinary service, Christ is at work. He is making you new, and that new life shows up in real things: repentance, patience, honesty, courage, gentleness, and love for neighbor.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, who took flesh for us and for our salvation, give us hearts made new. Lead us through this Lenten season to the cross and empty tomb, and renew us so that we may die to sin and live before You in righteousness and purity forever. Amen.

A Prayer for the Beginning of Spring:

I give thanks to You, O God and Father, that, in health and joy, You have caused me to see the delightful springtime of another year. You cause the whole world to be renewed, the dead-bound earth to revive again and be filled with the life of creatures, and to abound with grass and flowers. In humbleness I pray You, guard us from killing frosts, and prevent all accidents, that during this year I may gratefully enjoy Your bounty. Grant me grace also, constantly as Your faithful child to rejoice in Your Fatherly goodness and providence, and always to look forward to the ultimate springtime, which is the last of days. Then shall follow everlasting joy, unending beauty and glory. Then is the blessed resurrection from the dead, and my flesh shall again spring forth renewed, and my mortal body shall become like unto the glorified body of our risen Lord Jesus Christ. Even then will I laud, praise, and evermore magnify You, together with Your dear Son and the much beloved Holy Ghost, for all Your benefits. Amen.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the Church gives us a beautiful way to begin the day: the prayer-poem known as St. Patrick’s Breastplate. Many of us know it through the hymn “I Bind Unto Myself Today” (LSB #604), which opens with the line:
“I bind unto myself today, the strong name of the Trinity.”

We're not praying for a clover as a luck charm, but we are asking for the Lord’s faithful presence as we live as His baptized people in our daily callings, especially during Lent.

Here are the words many Christians pray on St. Patrick’s Day from the original Breastplate:
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

In Lent, we’re reminded how often we’re tempted, distracted, anxious, or weary. This prayer turns us outward from ourselves to Christ. Then we step into Monday morning, the kitchen, the classroom, the field, the office, the hospital room, the neighbor’s need, with this simple confidence: the Lord who died and rose for us is with us, and He will keep us in the way of repentance and faith.

So this day, as you wear your green, pray that others would see not just that color, but Christ in you, in all you say, in all you do, in all that you are.

A few easy ways to start today:
• At lunch: “What was one thing you heard?”
• In the car: “What were the readings about?”
• At bedtime: one short prayer, one short verse
• During the week: revisit one of the hymns you sang

God be with all those fighting the fires in our state. Protect our lives and livelihoods

Lord, strengthen my faith, my trust and hope in your goodness, lest I lose heart if the danger should come closer. Bless the efforts being made even now to extinguish the fire, and let them succeed. Fill all who come to the aid of the suffering with true love, tender pity, and Your fear, that they may render their assistance and help honestly....Make a speedy end of our distress. Let order and quiet be restored to this place. Quench the smoldering flames and do not allow them to break out afresh....Graciously hear this prayer and the prayers of all other godly Christians, and send forth your help, and we will praise and glorify You for this and all other benefits in time and afterwards in eternity. Amen.

How often do we get home from church and realize we can’t quite answer simple questions like: What did you hear today? What were the readings? What did we sing? What was the sermon about, and what comfort or correction did God’s Word give? The Divine Service is the Lord’s gift to us, and it’s a joy to carry that gift into the rest of the week, so His Word doesn’t slip away as soon as we walk out the door. God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, and bringing it to mind helps guide our steps as we head into the week. Here is a resource to help you “bring home” the Divine Service with a few simple questions and habits you can use with your family (or on your own): gordongrace.org/beliefs/bringing-home-the-divine-service/

Psalm 122:1 “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the LORD.’” (NKJV) That’s a beautiful confession, but if we’re honest, our hearts are not always glad. Sometimes we come distracted, rushed, or weighed down, and sometimes we leave again without God’s Word really sinking down into our hearts.

The Lord is still faithful, and He still gives His gifts, but it helps to come prepared, with ears ready to hear and a heart ready to receive.

We put together a short resource to help you prepare for the Divine Service, using God’s Word and prayer so you can listen more attentively, sing more fully, and receive Christ’s gifts with greater joy: https://gordongrace.org/beliefs/preparing-for-the-divine-service/
