FRIDAY FOCUS: “Daniel: Character Over Convenience”
Date: May 24, 2026
Scripture: Daniel 1, 3, and 6
Big Idea: Daniel lived a life of integrity, even in the most pressured times. He illustrated how we are expected to live and respond in times of difficulty and unfairness.
(Note: Remember! There is only one service Sunday at 10 AM followed by a potluck meal! Please bring two plates to share!)
Leonard Hodo was one of my spiritual heroes growing up. He was the father of one of my best friends and I had many opportunities to see how he responded to life outside of church. Leonard was in charge of the buildings and grounds of the Christian camp that was so important to me when I was young. I watched him work, play, worship and minister. I ate at his table, and even dated his daughter. There was one thing that was a constant in his life—he was a man of public and private integrity.
I remember attending with Darla a party at the end of a marriage retreat at that camp. All of the couples got together to have a fun evening of games, food and laughter. I remember one of the leaders beginning to tell a joke that had the word “bathroom” in it. Immediately Leonard stood up and squashed the joke. He did not want a single thing to be said that was questionable. Now, the fact is, it was not going to be a “dirty” joke at all, but he was committed to ensuring that he was not involved in anything that was even questionable. That made an impression on me.
The prophet, Daniel, was challenged multiple times to follow the crowd, do the easy thing and succumb to pressure. But every time he chose to do what honored God and put himself last. He chose character over convenience.
I would encourage you to read his story in Daniel chapters 1, 3, and 6 before you come to church.
I look forward to studying God’s word with you this Sunday!
Peace on the journey,
Pastor Brent
