Woman Spotlight: Rev. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes

Rev. Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes is a pioneering scholar, minister, and voice in the study of African American religion and womanist theology. A sociologist of religion and Professor Emerita of African American Studies and Sociology at Colby College, Rev. Gilkes has spent decades examining the central role of Black women in the life and leadership of the Black church.

In addition to her academic work, Rev. Gilkes serves in ministry at Union Baptist Church in Cambridge, where her scholarship and faith intersect through preaching, teaching, and community engagement. Her writings frequently explore faith, justice, race, and the moral responsibilities of religious communities, with essays appearing in outlets such as Religion News Service.

A respected voice in both academia and ministry, Rev. Gilkes’ work has helped illuminate the often-overlooked leadership and spiritual labor of Black women in religious spaces. Through her scholarship, sermons, and public commentary, she continues to challenge society to confront injustice while drawing strength from faith traditions rooted in resilience and liberation.

✨ Why we celebrate her:
Rev. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes embodies the power of faith, scholarship, and advocacy—uplifting the voices, contributions, and spiritual leadership of Black women across generations.

Quote to remember:
"Black women have long been the backbone of religious life and community transformation." — Rev. Dr. Cheryl Townsend Gilkes

March Birthday Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for the precious gift of life and for allowing Your servant to see another birthday in this blessed month of March 2026. Lord, we acknowledge that every good and perfect gift comes from You, and today we celebrate Your faithfulness, Your mercy, and Your unfailing love.

Father, thank You for carrying them through every trial, every valley, and every victory. Thank You for the doors You opened, the prayers You answered, and even the prayers You protected them from. You have been their keeper, their provider, and their strength.

Lord, as they enter this new year of life, we ask that You would order their steps according to Your divine will. Crown this year with favor, peace, good health, and supernatural blessings. Let increase, restoration, and overflow be their portion. Strengthen their faith, renew their spirit, and fill their heart with joy unspeakable.

Father, release new opportunities, divine connections, and fresh anointing over their life. Let no weapon formed against them prosper, and let Your hedge of protection surround them wherever they go. May this year be marked by growth, purpose, and fulfillment of every promise You have spoken over them.

Lord, remind them that they are chosen, loved, and called for such a time as this. Let their life continue to be a testimony of Your grace and Your power.

We declare that their latter shall be greater than their former, and the best is yet to come.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray,
Amen.
