“Taking your kids to cemeteries is a little…dark, don’t you think?”

No, no I don’t think.
I’m concerned we don’t visit them ENOUGH.

Cemeteries are absolute gold mines in terms of historical empathy, historical orientation, and contextual conversations. (As Christians, visiting cemeteries gives a unique opportunity to discuss our faith.)

We visit people who likely haven’t had visitors in a long, long time.
We look at interesting names, and try to see who is related.
We study the dates, figure out how old the person was, and I put their lives in historical context:
-What events were happening during their lifetime?
-How might these events have impacted their daily life, belief system, social norms, etc.?
-What events have transpired since the person’s death land how might these events affect our current world?

Visiting a cemetery also reminds us how short life is—something that puts everything in perspective.
We aren’t here long, and the things that seem so big….aren’t really so big. It’s been a while since I’ve had a cemetery lesson, and seeing this picture reminds me how important they are.

Go. Visit.
It’s not “dark”, it’s rich.
It’s not depressing, it’s enlightening.
It orients us to (and humanizes) the past,
stimulates historical empathy,
and gives amazing opportunity to understand the impact historical events had on the lives of real people.

Take your kids to the cemetery.

Maine Monument Maintenance, part 2, of last weekend's clean at Mount Calvary Cemetery Lisbon Falls, Maine. My great-grandparents suffered the loss of their 3-year-old son Dennis due to pneumonia, I believe. It's extremely heartbreaking and very sobering to learn and see of all the children that passed at such tender young ages due to many sicknesses. This day, we had the honor of giving this special baby some tender loving care and bringing back important remembrance. Richard led the restoration on this one, and he did so lovingly and a beautiful job.🙏🪽🪽

Maine Monument Maintenace, had the pleasure and the joy of refurbishing and bringing life back to not one set of great grandparents but two this weekend!! At Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lisbon Falls, Maine. It has been a long while since I have laid eyes on my great-grandparent's stone. I was a very young child. This would have been my grandmother's parents. We found her stone, which was double with my great-grandfather and another stone near the children's cemetery down the hill, where their 3-year-old child was laid to rest. The double headstone of my great-grandparents had years of buildup. Loads of sandy grit and overgrowth of lichen rooted deeply on top of this headstone along with deep staining of the last name and first. We edged the stone, prepared it with a gentle scrape to remove the bulk of the debris, treated it, and began a deep clean and removal of sunken in mud to all of the deep carvings, care and diligence wins the race. It was a slow process of scrubbing with a toothbrush and small wooden tools to remove the buildup with several rinses between. The end result is a bright and gleaning stone. A beautiful faux fall floral wreath with small pumpkins adorn this beautiful autumn toned headstone. Today's song of choice for this special couple, as my great-grandmother, was a very talented organist at her church, Ave Maria.🙏🙏😊💝
