Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: In What Tense Are You Living?

People often quote the Scripture, but fail to understand its depths. We scratch surface deep and walk away, never having drank from the Well of Salvation that refreshes the Soul. Let's dive head first into the deep today.

Our Text: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21. 17. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19. To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

We often miss the depths of the Scripture because we ignore the depths of our language. This passage is full of nuances in the English language that when laid bare, provide a bounty to feast upon in meditation. Let's look at three words in verse seventeen that hold such treasure. The first word is found in the opening phrase of the verse: Therefore IF any man be in Christ. The word IF is seen as conditional, but it is also in this usage used to introduce a Qualifying Term or Clause. Everything that follows the opening phrase only applies to the Believer. It can not be applied to any man, woman, boy or girl that has not experienced the new birth. The list man may repeat the verse, but until he experiences the New Birth, he can not understand the Promises that the Scripture contains.

The second word that we must understand is found in the second clause that follows the first; (he IS a new creature). The Word IS, is our keyword. Is is present tense, it literally means BE. So the truth of these two opening phrases, or clauses is based upon the experience of the New Birth and the Immediacy of the New Creature. The New Creature is not something that you become, or will become in the future, but the Authority of the Word of God states that in the New Birth you IS a New Creature. I know that's poor grammar, modern speach would say that the moment you were born again, you are a new creature.

The third word is found several times through out the remainder of our text. ( old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.) The word is ARE. ARE is perfect present tense in this clause. Old things ARE Passed Away, meaning that the Old Things, our Old Ways are dead. When? The moment you are Born Again. Behold, is another word that means now fix your attention upon. Too much of our focus is directed to the Old man, the Old ways, our previous condition being dead in trespasses and sins, in part because God's People are too sin focused, instead of being Christ Focused. Behold, All things ARE become new. Again when? At the New Birth.

Here is where the Power of God can set you free from the shame of Sin. Because of the Completed Work of Jesus Christ, God has Reconciled us unto himself. You can not reconcile yourself, God did the reconciling. Note the next phrase: (NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES UNTO THEM). Imputing is an accounting term. Just as reconciling is also an accounting term. We have to ask ourselves who are the THEM, that God does not Impute their Tresspasses to? Those that are in Christ, from verse seventeen. That is you, if you have experienced the New Birth. (Romans 4:7-8
7. Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.)

Since God keeps the books, and has reconciled us, the Believer to himself, what did He do with our sin? (21.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.) He placed our sin upon Jesus Christ, and the Righteousness of Christ upon the Believer. This is why we deal with the Shame of Sin, and not the act of sin. God has already Judged our sin, at Calvary. Placing it, sin upon Jesus Christ. Satan blinds us in our understanding of Who we are in Christ Jesus, and the benefits of the New Birth. We are beneficiaries of His Rich Mercy, through Jesus Christ, ( Ephesians 2:4-5. 4. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5. Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;))

This leads to the question; In what Tense are you living? Are you waiting on God to suddenly improve your condition, as you struggle with Grace? Or are you Complete In Christ? (Colossians 2: 10-15.
10. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11. In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12. Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14. Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15. And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.)

Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: Remembering To Forget and Forgetting To Remember: Part Two

Let's jump straight into our text today.

Our Text: Philippians 3: 13-15. 13. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15. Let us therefore, as many as perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

One of the worst things to teach to New Believers is to recount the depravity of sin in which they were involved, and call it a testimony. The focus is upon their sins, rather than upon the work of the Saviour. Somewhere along the line, the Church swallowed the lie that to have a great testimony for Jesus Christ, one must tell you how deeply they lived for the devil. Soon young people within the church get the idea that their testimony of recognizing they were a sinner, in need of a Saviour is not enough. Then many get involved in worldliness just to build up their credibility. Our credibility is not what testifying is about. We are to lift up Christ as our only hope. Our Testimony is never us testifying FOR Christ, if we leave Him out of our testimony. We are to Testify OF CHRIST and What He Has done in us.

Paul in every account of his testimony regarding his past, his old man, was short on the deeds of the flesh, while calling sin by its proper name; he left the details of his depraved life out. Yet transitioned quickly into the Work of the Saviour. Because he understood that not only was it important to forget the past, he also knew that there was a New Direction for the New Man to follow. One can not spend forty minutes in wallowing around in the past of his sin.; Wallowing in the mudhole of depravity, then speak for forty seconds speaking; but praise God Jesus Saved me, and be walking in the principle Paul laid out.

If Forgetting To Remember and Remembering To Forget, one does not ignore their past, but they do not dwell upon the past. This was Paul's Example. He rather focused upon the new Direction. ( 14. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ) then Paul through the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost challenges all who read; ( Let us therefore, as many as perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. )

Child of God it's difficult to BE THUS MINDED, if you are constantly focused upon Sin's Shame and Regrets. Focus upon Pressing towards the Mark. I often caution folks when they get focused upon the prize, we press towards the Mark, we will be rewarded one day with the Prize for our pressing. Because God is calling us towards the Mark, which is to be like Jesus Christ.

Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: Remembering To Forget and Forgetting To Remember Part 1

The battlefield of the mind belongs to whom you yield it. Just as my friend had held a funeral for the Old Man, he would admit that many times the Old Man would have a ressurection of sorts. The battle scars of life, the memories are often tools the devil uses to take control over the battlefield once again.

Our Text:Philippians 3:8-16
8. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9. And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10. That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11. If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14. I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. 15. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. 16. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

Before we get too deep into this study, I must state that this deals with the Shame of Sin in the Believer especially concerning their Sanctification, not that of the Unbeliever, who is lost in their unbelief. These are two different aspects, because one has believed that Jesus Christ bore their sins at Calvary, that their sins were judged at Calvary and the other the Unbeliever bears the burden of their own sins and will be Judged at the great white Throne judgement. This is why I am dealing with the Shame of Sin, instead of Sin, because for the Believer, their Sin has already been judged, our sins were imputed onto Jesus Christ in order that His Righteousness can be imputed unto us.

The Shame of Sin is rooted within the mind, and Satan and the people doing his bidding are more than willing to bring it up. As Paul under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost lays out the qualifications of his old man in the verses prior to our text, he brings up his Zeal, his persecution of the Church. Paul never denied the set of facts. Often we attempt to deny and justify our standing based upon our emotions, intellect, and opinions of the facts; in the mirror of self interest. Paul is making his statement concerning the facts regarding the Old Man, Saul and his deeds and qualifications based upon the mirror of God's Word, rather than Paul attempting to clean up his old image.

You will always struggle with the Shame and guilt of sin, until you own the facts concerning your sin and failures. Paul did not make thus set of facts his focus, but rather he focused upon the purpose for which God called him to Christ and His Work. As long as a man keeps looking in the mirror of self interest, he is caught in a trap set to keep him bound in a prison, with chains of his own choosing. But the moment he owns the facts concerning the sin and confesses it to the Lord as Sin; He can the walk in the Freedom that Jesus Christ has already provided him as his Propitiation.

Unfortunately there are many people, that in the name of Religion, who choose to ignore the Power of Christ's Completed Work in order to hold another's mind in bo***ge to something that Christ had fully and completely forgiven and forgotten. Some even hold themselves in that same bo***ge, choosing to embrace the shame and living in regret, rather than the Liberty of Jesus Christ. Learning to forget the past and then learning to forget to remember was the Key that Paul shared. It is the same key that we must choose to unlock the door and walk free from the Shame of Sin.

Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: You Need To Attend A Funeral

It doesn't matter, in Gods eyes, what sin one might be caught up in, as much as it matters to men. The reason I point this out is because too often we seek the approval and forgiveness from men, that only can come from God. It doesn't matter what sin, brings shame to your life: only Jesus Christ can bring forgiveness and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. You will never be in good standing with men, until you're in good standing with God, and there are some men, that even God's Forgiveness will never satisfy them. Until you have a funeral for the Old Man, you'll never experience the Victory in the New Man through Jesus Christ.

Our Text: Romans 6: 11-14
11. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Regardless of the Sin that brings Shame to a Believer, there are only two ways to handle it. The Right Way; aka the Biblical Way, or the Wrong Way. Often when a Believer is caught in sin, many attempt to hide it from discovery, both as individuals and even organizations. But there's something about a dead body that many people ingnore: A Dead Body starts to stink. You may cover up the odor by some artifical means, but you must continually keep up the work to hide the odor from others, but no matter how flowery the perfume of choice, the stench can not be hidden from the nostrils of God. This is true for the Unbeliever, who is dead in trespasses and sins, as well as the Believer that chooses to walk in the flesh, rather than the Spirit.

In the natural, we bury our dead. Yet spiritually speaking, many have not been taught that the Old Man is Dead, and we walk in newness of Life. Paul made many references to his self being dead. (1 Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.) ( Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.) Even Romans 12: 1-2 are representative of our death to self. (1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.)

Why is this area such a problem with the Modern Church? Because we have ignored the change of ownership. ( 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 19. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.) Once we acknowledge the title deed to everything in our life belongs to Jesus Christ, we have a choice to make, to whom will we yield. Will we yield to the New Owner and the New Man, or will we refuse and rebel and yield to sin. I am convinced that the reason many men, with in the Modern Church have issues with sins such as po*******hy, lust, and other addictions, just to name a few; is because they have never learned to yield to Christ, because yielding to the flesh comes so naturally. Let me end with this today; I knew a man that was attending a church years ago that told a group of men that he attended a funeral that morning. They asked; Who died? He answered; Me. Looking puzzled at that statement, he explained; before I came to Christ I was an abusive Husband, a Drunkard, and Adulterer. I'd fight anyone at the drop of a hat. When I got saved, I struggled at first until a Preacher showed me that the Old Man was dead, the New Man was alive. I went home and held a funeral. I wrote down and confessed everything about the Old me that I knew was unpleasing to the Lord, the things I had done. I put the list in an old plastic container and dug a hole in my yard and buried it, in an marked grave. When I leave to go to work, I walk past that grave, not to remember the Old man I was, but to Celebrate the Transgorming Grace of God, and the Life I have in Christ. I yield myself to the Lord, and go about His way, because He is leading me along my journey.

Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: Following A Godly Pattern

Under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost, Paul speaks that he is a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to everlasting life. Therefore it is beneficial to examine the pattern in Paul and through Paul in order to learn to deal with the Shame of Sin.

Our Text: 1 Timothy 1:16
Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

We know that Saul was present at the stoning of Stephen. He was giving his consent for the stoning. Standing there with the coats of the men laid at his feet. Saul was a Persecutor and Injurious, to name a couple of his sins according to his testimony in (1 Timothy 1:13 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.) Paul recounted a conversation with the Lord in a vision, when he was being arrested in Jerusalem (Acts 20: 19-20. 19. And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: 20. And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.) From this we understand that Paul had a past. In many churches today, if Paul was to make the statement of his past, there would be some that would constantly throw up his past at every opportunity.

How often do we read of our heros of the faith and ignore the fact that they had a past? While Paul remembered the past, he did not live there. He learned that through The Completed Work of Jesus Christ, that Christ Himself had overcame his past, and removed any guilt that might be associated with the past. Listen carefully, often people caught up in sin, can never forgive themselves, because they focus on the failure and not do not understand the Forgiveness of God. They live permanently chained to the Shame of Sin, but not Paul.

It is in the teachings of Paul, under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost, that we find the Pattern that was established in Paul, that Paul through his epistles, wrote concerning the New Creature in Christ. The very Foundation of the Freedom for the Believer found in Christ Jesus, begins with a funeral. That's where we will take up the Pattern next time.

Dealing With The Shame Of Sin: Forsaking The Identity Of The Past

We call a drunk, a drunkard. We call those with loose morals that forsake their spouses, adulterers. We call people that use drugs for recreational purposes; drug addicts and drug abusers. We often judge others and even ourselves by the past. When dealing with the Shame of Sin, a believer must consider their past as dead. Learning to Identify with Jesus Christ.

Our Text:1 Timothy 1: 9-16
9. Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 11. According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. 12. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13. Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

For years I thought and taught about Sin. Much of my preaching was about Sin. To be honest I was More Sin Conscience than I was Conscience of the Completed Work of Jesus Christ. I found it hard to forgive others of their past, because I struggled with the Sin of my past. The truth be told, this is the reason that many in the church struggle in our understanding that our sins being forgiven, forgotten, for good.

We revert back to the law, in dealing with ourselves and others. Forgetting the purpose of the Law is to prove our guilt. For the Believer, they have already settled in their mind that under the law, we are all guilty. But Scripturally one must ask if the Believer is currently Under the Law? No, we are under the Righteous of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.) Christ Righteousness is Imputed to the Believer. ( Romans 4: 20-25. 20. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21. And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24. BUT FOR US ALSO, TO WHOM IT SHALL BE IMPUTED, IF WE BELIEVE ON HIM THAT RAISED UP JESUS OUR LORD FROM THE DEAD; 25. WHO WAS DELIVERED FOR OUR OFFENCES, AND WAS RAISED AGAIN FOR OUR JUSTIFICATION.)

Paul under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost plainly states that the Law is not for a Righteous Man. Paul also lists a long list of sins, of those to whom the law was for. Sometimes we look at this list and we remember our sin. After all this list is not exhaustive, but our looking back to the law brings us a sense of Guilt, rather than Freedom.
Under guilt, we self justify. We point to others who are just as guilty as we are, we drag up the Strength of the Law which is Sin.

Paul made a statement about himself that we ignore. (13. Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. ) If we miss two vital words: WAS BEFORE, we miss the Dividing line shown here clearly by the Sword of the Spirit. Paul did all of these things, while he was in Unbelief, while he was Under the Law. Now Paul transitions to Grace. (14. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. ) If we miss the Transition we will constantly misunderstand the most misquoted statement of Paul later in the Chapter. Paul is no longer Under the Law, but Under Righteousness by the Grace of God.

Let's now look at Paul's statement made under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost. (15. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.) Because Paul is looking back at the Purpose for Jesus Christ, to save Sinners under the Law, he counts himself before he was saved, while being under the law, as the chief. We see this proven out in a verse we skip over; (16. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.) Howbeit is the key to understanding; the Word means, be that as it may, nevertheless, notwithstanding, yet, but, however. This Word is a Transition from his reflection of his past as being under the law, to his Position as being Under Christ's Righteousness. For this cause I obtained mercy. Note the use of the past tense verb. Then he goes on to the purpose of his obtaining Mercy. That Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for A PATTERN to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. Paul's life in Christ, is a pattern for the Believer. Especially any Believer struggling with the guilt of shame concerning Sin. One must learn to rest in The Completed Work of Jesus Christ, before they can reset their identity in Christ.

Our Identity

I am going to go into a study series dealing with the subject: Dealing with the Shame of Sin. But am using this as a bridge from the last lesson from the previous series to in effect tie them together.

Our Text: Romans 7:15-25
15. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: 23. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 25. I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Many people will spend hours under Biblical Teaching and Preaching, only to ignore God's Word and the Sufficiency of Jesus Christ concerning sin, and their identity. They often use terminology concerning their struggle with sin, as a battle between them and Sin. They Fail to consider the Scriptures as a Battle between two natures, in the same body. Our text Paul never speaks as being in a battle between his flesh and sin. But rather the battle is between Sin, in the Old Man and the New Nature. Our Flesh is caught in the battlefield raging upon the mind.

In the Modern Ritualized Church, we hear the call for Affirmation over the call for Repentance. Many take the idea of looking for the good in people, yet fail to believe the Scriptures when they teach there are none that doeth good. Even Paul under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost speaks in our text: (18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. ) Until we begin to agree with the Word of God, we can not begin to see nor experience the Victory that is in Christ. We forfeit the victory, that is already ours, in order to embrace the identity of the flesh. So we must start at the beginning, in order to arrive at the proper destination.

Paul recognized that the real battle ground was in his mind, what he allowed to to control his thought process determined his physical actions and responses. This war was the battle for control between his flesh, the Old Man and His Spirit, the New Man. We all face this same battle, yet here's the plain truth; this battle is never one through the power of the flesh. Paul recognized the condition that he was in; O WRETCHED MAN THAT I AM! The psychology of the world teaches us to look for the good, Affirm the good, speak the good. Paul knew there was nothing good that was going to come from his flesh, and until we begin to acknowledge that same truth we can not progress. Paul chose on purpose to identify not with his flesh, but with his Propitiation and Justifier, Jesus Christ.

Paul asks "Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? " Today's world has thousands of answers, including pull yourself up by your bootstraps, but self Deliverance is folly. The only answer is Jesus Christ. Paul's decision, again under the Inspiration of the Holy Ghost, was to commit to Serve the Lord in His Mind first, and foremost, while he recognized that his flesh was under the law of sin. In this moment in time, the Believer's identity is that of being Justified through Jesus Christ, we are Being Sanctified by the washing of water by the Word. But Glory to God, One day we shall be Glorifed, Changed in a moment, immortal, incorruptible, to be like Jesus. We are Saved from the Penalty of Sin, We are being saved from the Power of Sin. But then we will forever be free from the presence of Sin. We either identify with the Sufficiency of Jesus Christ as being our Propitiation and Justifier, or we choose to identity with our flesh and the sin that we embrace.
