After I bought my iPad Pro 10.5, I learned that the Microsoft apps for Word and Excel, etc were no longer free. I started looking for a free replacement. I posted one before, but as it turns out it is not free.

I found the Office app, designed for iPhone, is my free replacement. I’ve used it with several existing files and it works fine. The on,y caviar is if a file in is in an older version, you may need to make a copy to work as a current version.

The screen is different than the Word, Excel app screens. But if you are using simple to moderate features, it will probably work for you. But it’s free!

My chiropractor wanted me to work on my postures. So I created a stand for my iPad Pro 10.5 and use it now with a mouse and Bluetooth keyboard. It is working out extremely well. It is light weight. Uses a small foot print. The parts cost less than $10.00 (excluding the black spray paint.) I think i completed the design, purchasing, and construction in less than 2 hours. You can probably shave some time off of that by copying my finished design. You can make the height to suit yourself.

The legs are 6” lengths and the stability is excellent.

MS Office Free/Low Cost Substitute

I bought an iPad Pro 10.5 a year ago. I was thrilled with the amazing features I now had at my fingertips. But I was very disappointed the first time I tried to use the MS Word app. I had used it extensively on my iPad Air and loved the interconnectivity with my iPad and PC using cloud services to keep in sync.

But the first time using Word on my Pro, it asked me to log in. After several go attempts,I found that Microsoft was requiring me to use a paid version of Office because I was now considered a business user just because I was using a Pro.

I searched for any type of free or low cost replacement and finally found one this week.

Meet Polaris Office. It is a multiplatform replacement for MS Office. The free version forces you to watch video ads. This can be removed by a one-time purchase of $4.95.

In my testing I have been able to create new documents and spreadsheets in Office format as well as edit existing MS documents and spreadsheets. It works with files in its own app file system as well as the IOS Files app and online services OneDrive, Drop Box, and ICloud.

As for features, I have found all the common features work great. If you are a sophisticated advanced user, you will want to research features in more detail.

If you just bought an iPad Pro and don't want to invest in MS Office, give Polaris Office a try.
www.Polarisoffice.com and in the App Store.

I am starting a project to write a monologue on the life of Paul. I have recently found an awsome iPad app and Mac/PC application for writing called Scrivener.

Here’s a blog post about it. If you use it, leave a comment about your experience.

I have many sources I expect to use during my research and want an effective way to save and retrieve material for the writing process.

Note Taking On iPad Pro

I bought my iPad Pro 10.5 a few months ago along with a used Apple Pencil 1, both used on EBay. The biggest benefit has been going paperless in several areas of note taking and planning.

For note taking, I am using Noteshelf 2 (about 9.99 in App Store) There are a few others similar apps you May the Lord bless and keep you and make His face shine upon you want to check out. Notes Plus, Good Notes and Notabilty among others

With the Apple Pencil, I am using Noteshelf 2 for taking sermon notes, Bible study notes and keeping prayer lists as well as for my daily planner. It integrates beautifully with PDFs and other files that can be imported.

I will make another post about using a digital planner with Noteshelf 2. An awesome way to stay organized and easily search for information you have entered.

Digital note-taking, simplified! Take beautiful handwritten notes, type, annotate PDFs, record audio and create lists. Sync and share them with your colleagues, friends, and family!

A great printing tip, especially for emails. Wished I’d found it sooner.

At $329, the price of the new 9.7-inch iPad is just right.

Review of Zagg Rugged Book keyboard case.

This case is great if you are looking for the options of durability and flexibility. The case is extremely strong and offers great protection. Also what I have grown to appreciate more is being able to easily detach the iPad from the case and use it to read or performing other tasks more easily done with out the keyboard. The key layout is one of the best and I have started using what is the equivilant of the alt-tab Windows keys to scroll thru open apps. A great option.
