History of the Meckville Congregation

Twelve miles north of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on a slight knoll near the foot of the Blue Mountain; there is a brick church known as Meckville Mennonite Church. Perhaps we could say the congregation had its roots in Virginia and West Virginia since several families from those states moved to the Meckville area and eventually established a church in the communi

ty. The Meckville church was so named because of its nearness to the village of Meckville, which consisted of three houses and a post office in the general store. Although the post office and store burned to the ground the place is still called Meckville to this day. On August 23, 1931, a Sunday School was started with 63 persons present. January 14, 1932, the house burned to the ground less than five months after the first Sunday School service was conducted. February 8, 1932, less than a month after the fire, eighty four different people donated a total of three hundred days of their time. Thus the building was erected in a little over two months at a cost of $3,246.25. The new place of worship was known as the Meckville Mennonite Mission, dedicated at morning, afternoon and evening services on April 24, 1932.. Twelve years later the name was changed to Meckville Mennonite Church as it is still known today.
