8/24:
Roman 6:6 says, “For we know that our old self was crucified with Him (Christ) so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” Are you hanging on to some “pet” sin in your life? Maybe no one knows about it but you. You think you can control it, lessen its effects, or mitigate the damage it does, but you are not willing to put it to death. In reality you are a slave to that which you will not eliminate. This is hard. It’s hard to make the commitment to kill that pet sin. We would rather weaken it or try to control it, but a truly great day in your life will be when you make the commitment that with the aid of the Holy Spirit you will put to death that indwelling sin. Remember the promise here from Paul – you will no longer be a slave to sin.

8/17/2026:
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, “Blessed are those that mourn.” (Matthew 5:4) There is a normal mourning when we grieve over our losses. Every person is afflicted in this way at some time. God’s comfort in such times is a blessing to those who know Him. However, Jesus has in mind here grieving over our sin. So often we grow used to certain sins rather than grieving over them. It is easy to grow fond of certain pet sins in which we do not see any overt harm. These are generally hidden in the recesses of our hearts. Jerome said, “it is worse to love sin than to commit it”. Galatians 6:1 says we may be overtaken by sin. You may stumble or be overtaken unawares, but to love sin, to love certain sins, hardens the heart. There is no grieving over sin. There is no grief because you have sinned against a holy God. Look deep into your own heart. See the things there that you know are sin but things to which you cling in love. Mourn over them. Repent and turn from them and find the true blessing promised by the Lord Jesus.
