June 9th, 2026:
We have a God who speaks. He is a stark departure from the dumb idols of man’s creation that cannot speak, hear, see, or act. God speaks and He speaks in Jesus Christ His final Word. As the author of Hebrews wrote: “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed Heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.” Christ’s coming marks our present time as the “last days” of salvation. That salvation is found in Jesus Christ and comes by hearing His Word. Our message to the world should echo the words of God the Father at the transfiguration: “This is My Son, whom I love, Listen to Him!” Are we listening? Are we truly asking the world around us to listen?

George Matheson, the blind Scottish preacher, prayed “O Lord, as long as I am apart from You, I am self-satisfied, because I have no standard by which to measure my low stature. But when I come near to You, there for the first time I see myself. In Your light I behold my darkness. In Your purity I behold my corruption.” May we all examine ourselves in the light of God’s purity. It is easy to become self-satisfied when we compare ourselves with other sinners, but under the bright light of God’s Word we can see our actions, thoughts, and motives for what they are and cry out for mercy which is abundant and free from our great God, Lord, and Savior.

May 19 devotional:

Francis of Assisi said, “The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today.” I would add, they may the only sermon some people ever hear. That raises the question, what do your deeds say about: our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, His Church, and about Christians, if people know that’s what you are? Do your deeds deliver a powerful sermon to the world? May we, as the Lord’s people, deliver thousands of messages of hope to a hopeless world each day.
