And I saw the river
over which every soul must pass
to reach the Kingdom of Heaven,
and the name of the river was Suffering.

And I saw the boat which carries souls across that river,
and the name of the boat was Love.

Scripture records every cry of the human heart. Throughout his life, Jesus freely chose to experience every cry, including loneliness, grief, frustration, disappointment, and rejection. He was misunderstood, wrongfully accused, ignored, and betrayed. He, who is the Living Water, knew the dryness of the desert. He, who is the well that never runs dry, knew thirst.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If any one thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” (John 8:38-39)

There is a deeper well of life within us that our thirst leads us to find—a river of grace that sings the joys of resurrection. In other words, longing for the Lord is to receive the promise that he is with us.

Our hearts are like a house with many rooms, some filled with light, others locked in darkness, some cleaned and waiting to be filled, and others with doors that are half-opened. Sometimes we don’t even know that the room exists until God enters and we experience his love pouring through an old wound we tried to forget. God was patient with Elijah, Peter, and David. God is patient with us. We should be patient with ourselves. There is beauty in our vulnerability, in the exposure of our weakness, not only to God but also to ourselves, that moves us to compassion whenever we see it in someone else.

Jesus IS the word of God, steadfast in his love—a love that is ever new and unchanging, a love that now resides in us, a well of life-giving water that never runs dry. In other words, there is always something more to learn or accept, such as a revelation of truth that in the past we may have overlooked, rejected, or misunderstood. Although our moods may shift throughout the day or our plans be interrupted by unforeseen needs at work or home, the Lord still speaks through His word, guiding us on the path one step at a time. Through His grace, we stay in the present moment, leaving in His trustworthy hands the future that is unknown to us.
