A Message from Bishop James T Ruggieri: The Dignity and Value of Every Human Life

I am truly saddened by the recent death of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford. The diocesan community and I have prayed for the repose of his soul, for the consolation of his family, and for all those affected by the tragic and confusing circumstances of his death, including the law enforcement officers involved. Following Mr. Durán Guerrero’s death, I have received different requests concerning how I should respond. These requests and reactions have led me to reflect on a deeper issue: our society’s increasingly fragmented understanding of the dignity of the human person. At this moment in our history, I feel that Maine must undertake a serious examination of its collective conscience. We must also recognize that radical secularism, by removing God and the transcendent dimension of the human person from our public conversation about human dignity, threatens our common well-being. We need not surrender to division, indifference, or despair. Despite our societal problems, conversion of heart remains both possible and necessary if we are to recover a more consistent and humane respect for every human life.

The Tom Robinson family has created this invitation for family members to make a donation for a window to be donated at St Benedict’s Parish Center. We encourage and invite other families to use this idea to donate a window in memory of their loved ones!

Make a Legacy Donation:

One of our upcoming Capital Campaign projects is replacing the 27 aging windows at the Parish Center. Replacing these windows will improve energy efficiency and comfort, and help preserve this historic gathering place for generations to come. Our goal is to replace as many windows as possible before the cold weather sets in this winter.

We invite you to be part of this meaningful project by considering making a contribution to the Capital Campaign through a Legacy Donation toward the cost of a window. You can honor or remember a loved one or celebrate your family’s legacy while making a lasting contribution to the future of our parish. The cost to sponsor a window is $1,500.

A window sponsorship can be a wonderful family project. If five members of a family each contributed $300, or ten members of an extended family each contributed $150, they would fully sponsor one window in memory or honor of someone they love. Every gift, large or small, brings us one step closer to our goal. Every little bit helps.

Your generosity will help ensure that St. Benedict's Parish Center remains a welcoming place for worship, faith formation, fellowship, and community gatherings for many years to come.

“I’m tired, I mean like ………….Vacation Bible School kind of tired.”

And if you’ve ever served in VBS, you know what that means.

It means duct tape letting go, last minute craft details, rain predicted, and hearing, “How do you make that bread. Can I have the recipe? Will you write it down?” Lol

It means coming home exhausted, if you can even walk, and wondering if you will have the energy to do it all again tomorrow.

But it also means something else.

It means watching a child hear about Jesus in a way that finally clicks and means something to them.

It means hearing children’s “God sightings” as they share how they witnessed God in their lives the day before.

It means watching children praise God through song and dance.

It means watching the comfort and joy children receive as they “break bread” together.

It means praying with children in our beautiful, holy church and witnessing their reverence in God’s presence.

It means planting seeds that you may never see fully grow this side of heaven or you may see them grow right here in this place as they become members of the Catholic Church.

It means asking, “What is your favorite thing about VBS?” And having a child respond, “I like going to the church and Bible Adventures.”

Year 32 of VBS has ended at St Benedict’s, and while many of us are exhausted as we take are of each leftover craft item and remove the decorations, we are feeling blessed and thankful for the sharing of faith and evangelization that we experienced with these children, teens, and adults. We realize that this week is never really about the decorations, crafts, even the BREAD.

It’s about eternity.

These children learned about God’s creation, love, and that God is our safe place and His love is forever.

They were surrounded by people who love Jesus and His children.

So if you served at VBS, thank you for the preparation time, the early mornings, for sacrificing your time, energy, and comfort for the sake of the next generation! There are a few things in life worth being tired for and VBS is one of them! ❤️
