Today, we celebrate the feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa), whose life was devoted to serving the poor and forgotten and seeing the face of Christ in every person she encountered.
There’s a story often told about St. Teresa when someone asked how they could come to Calcutta to serve alongside her. Her response was:
“Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools. You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see.”
The poor, the lonely, and those in need of Christ’s love are not only found in faraway places. They are right where God has placed us. Our “Calcutta” might be our parish, workplace, campus, family, friend group, or local community. We don’t have to go far to find an opportunity to love like Christ.
We don’t have to wait for the perfect opportunity to serve. We just have to look around and ask: Where is my Calcutta?
