Operation Backpack

Operation Backpack This program started at Mabscott United Methodist Church and now at UM Temple. Each backpack contains a complete list of supplies appropriate for the age group.

Two churches and the local community effort has provided full backpacks for needy students through schools in four counties in southern WV for the last 30 years. The Mabscott United Methodist Church began the program in 1995 with six full backpacks for children in a shelter. It has grown yearly and provided 951 backpacks in 2015, requested by counselors in Pre-K-12 schools in Raleigh, Wyoming, Fay

ette and Summers counties. The support has grown also, from our small church to many other churches, community groups, businesses and individuals. We put out donation boxes in organizations and businesses; fundraise and shop; hold volunteer packing sessions, involving young and old in the effort; and hand over the needed number to each school counselor during the first week of school.

It’s time to start collecting your school supply donations! Look for the collection boxes at the following locations. Thank you for your continued support. This program has been a mission project for 30 years at Mabscott united Methodist Church. However, beginning this year the program will be continued thru United Methodist Temple.

After 30 years of being the coordinator for Operation Backpack, I retired last school year and looking for a new home to continue the program. I am pleased to announce that we found a new home to continue the work of Operation Backpack beginning with the new school year 2025-2026. The baton has been passed on to United Methodist Temple in Beckley. The program will stay the same with a new coordinator, Daniel Spurgeon. Please continue to support this program. So many children are in need of our support as a community. Watch for the collection boxes that will be placed in our community businesses in July to place your school supply donations.

Thank you businesses, organizations, and the community for supporting us to complete the 2024-2025 backpack mission. All schools have picked up for their students in need. We pray that those that receive a backpack will be blessed and have a successful school year. We were able to provide 1,172 filled backpacks this year.

The mission is complete for 2024-2025 school year. 1,152 backpacks K-12 have been packed with supplies. We are very grateful for the outpouring support from our community and businesses that allowed us to put collection boxes in their establishments. So many children will feel excited about school and learning all they can. We pray for many blessings for them during the new school year. We thank all the volunteers that were dedicated to make a difference in a child’s life preparing the backpacks.

There's a lot to discover in our Space Exploration themed camp weekend! Camp Mariposa is a prevention and mentoring program for West Virginia youth affected by the substance use disorder of a family member. Youth ages 9-12 participate in fun, traditional camp activities combined with educational and support sessions led by mental health professionals and trained volunteers. All Camp Mariposa activities are provided free of charge.
