💭 COVERING vs. COUNSEL — LET’S ASK THE WORD. 📖
I’ve been studying something deeper lately.
We often hear, “Who is your covering?”
But as I search Scripture, I keep finding the language and principle of COUNSEL.
📖 “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14
Here’s what I’m learning:
God gives the CALLING.
God gives the ASSIGNMENT.
God gives the VISION.
God gives the GIFTS.
And God can place people in our lives to give us counsel, wisdom, correction, accountability, mentorship, prayer, and guidance.
Moses was called by God, but received counsel from Jethro.
David was chosen by God, but received correction from Nathan.
Paul said his apostleship was “not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ.” — Galatians 1:1
Yet Paul still walked in relationship with other believers and leaders.
So for me, there’s a difference:
Counsel helps me steward what God gave me.
Counsel doesn’t become the source of what God gave me.
I absolutely believe in accountability.
I believe in godly leadership.
I believe in correction.
I believe in mentorship.
I believe in spiritual mothers and fathers.
And I definitely believe in wise counsel.
But I don’t believe another human being becomes the source or owner of a calling that came from God.
And here’s the question I’m sitting with:
Have we sometimes used the word “covering” to describe several things the Bible already calls counsel, leadership, fellowship, discipleship, and accountability?
I’m not attacking anybody’s church structure or what they choose to call their spiritual relationships.
I’m simply doing what I believe every believer should do:
Open the Bible. Search the Scriptures. Ask questions. And let the Word have the final say.
📖 Let’s Ask the Word: What does the Bible actually say?
