Hail to our kindred and our community. May you know a blessed Vetrnætr (Winter Nights).

“Odin established the same law in his land that had been in force in Asaland. On winter day (first day of winter) there should be blot for a good year, and in the middle of winter for a good crop; and the third blot should be on summer day, a Victory-blot.” - Ynglinga Saga, Chapter 8

“Now the games ceased, and the summer comes on, and there was rather a coldness between Thorgrim and Gisli. Thorgrim meant to have a harvest feast on the first night of winter, and to sacrifice to Frey. He bids to it his brother Bork, and Eyjolf the son of Thord, and many other great men. Gisli too made ready a feast, and bids to it his brothers-in-law from Arnafirth, and the two Thorkels; so that there were full sixty men at his house. There was to be a drinking-bout at each house, and the floor at Sæbol was covered with sedge won from Sedgetarn." - Gisli Sursson’s Saga, Chapter 15

This day, on the first full moon of winter, in the tradition of our ancestors, we pray to our Gods and ask for their blessings on our families and our homes in the coming year. May the bounties of our harvest sustain our families, may our homes be warm and filled with a measure of joy throughout the cold nights of this winter, and may summer return quickly and brings its warmth and life back to the world.

We ask the Landvættir to give us grace as we traverse their lands this season, that the coming season be fair, and that the creatures of the land know peace so that we may live in harmony together.

By the will of the Gods and Fate, may all be well in our hearths and with our kin this day and always.

Ostara marks the Spring Equinox, which happens between March 19 -23.

Ostara is a pagan celebration of the German goddess Eostre and the origins of the Christian celebration of Easter. As the beginning of spring Ostara is a good time to literally and figuratively plant seeds for the future.

The celebration of spring is present in many ancient customs. Like many other spring celebrations in other cultures, Ostara symbolizes fertility, rebirth, and renewal. This time of year marked the beginning of the agricultural cycle, and farmers would start planting seeds.

Many of the symbols of Ostara have roots in other traditions, and the use of rabbits and hares is one such example. In medieval times in Europe, the March hare was seen as a fertility symbol, and a sign of spring. This species of rabbit is nocturnal most of the year, but in March, it is mating season for the animal. During the mating season, March hares are seen all day long. Additionally, females of this species can get pregnant with a second litter while pregnant with their first litter. This explains why they were used as symbols for fertility.

Modern day pagans might go outside to meditate and perform a simple ritual to welcome the spring. Another common way to celebrate the coming spring is to plant seeds. Some families incorporate seasonal candy, such as peeps and chocolate rabbits, with their kids to help them get in the spirit of the event.

In modern day living Ostara is also a good time to start taking action on the ideas and goals you started thinking about around Yule and Imbolc. What you plant during Ostara will be ready to be harvested during the coming summer months and the sabbats of Beltane, Litha and Lughnasadh.

Ostara is also a good time to freshen up your home and life. Take time to do some spring cleaning. Cleaning isn't just limited to your home. Take some time to declutter and clean up areas where you spend a lot of time, like your car, your computer (delete those old emails!) or your work office.
