CMO Brotherhood Packs Yom HaShoah Candles for Delivery

On March 10th the Brotherhood set aside the normal monthly business meeting to pack Yom Hashoah candles for delivery to Mishkan Or congregant homes. Approximately 2,000 candles, with a flyer requesting free will donations to cover the cost of the program, were packed in bright yellow bags. Yom HaShoah begins sundown on Wednesday, April 23rd. All candles will be delivered by that date.

You will see one of these candle bags at your door soon. About 100 separate routes will be driven by brotherhood volunteers to deliver 1,400 of the candles.

Depending on locations in greater northeast Ohio, some congregants will receive a note in the mail that they can pick up their candles at the temple office. Congregants who live out of state will receive their candles by the postal service. A total of about 2,000 candles will be delivered this year.

Lester Potash, a past president of the Brotherhood, is the organizer of the annual candle delivery service. About two dozen men, along with some family members, participated in the annual candle packing event.

A group of 14 men sponsored by the Brotherhood of Congregation Mishkan Or devoted several hours in volunteer service at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank (GCFB) on Thursday 02/12/26.

The men worked in the GFCB's Resource Center helping people, who are experiencing food insecurity, to get canned goods, vegetables, milk, eggs, bread, chicken, and beef food items to take home without charge.

Following the late afternoons shift, the men went to Muldoon's Irish Saloon & Eatery for a no host dinner.

The event will be repeated on 03/12/26. The program was organized by Jon Messer.

A sukkah or succah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and often well decorated with autumnal, harvest or Judaic themes.

An idealized image of one is included below along with the home brewed version shown here in the process of built by the Brotherhood of Mishkan Or at the temple last week.

The significance of the sukkah in Judaism is rooted in the biblical account of the Israelites' 40-year journey through the desert after leaving Egypt, where they dwelled in temporary shelters.

By building and residing in a sukkah during the holiday of Sukkot, Jews commemorate this experience, symbolizing their ancestors' reliance on divine providence and God's protection.

The temporary nature of the sukkah also serves as a reminder of the impermanence of material possessions, fostering humility, gratitude, and a deeper spiritual connection to God.

For the second year in a row at Mishkan Or, the Brotherhood built a suucah for use by clergy and congregants to celebrate the seven days leading up to Simchat Torah, which is when we begin again reading the Torah from the start.

Simchat Torah is Hebrew for “the joy of Torah.” It is a celebration, often accompanied by dancing and singing, to mark the completion of the annual reading of the core document of Judaism.

On Sunday 9/8/25 The Brotherhood served breakfast to Limmud: Pre-K-12 Learning. Around 225 children and adults were offered pancakes, turkey sausage, juice and coffee.

The Brotherhood received a lot of positive praise from both the Congregants and the Temple staff on their hard work efforts. Everything turned out great. The Brotherhood volunteers all worked very hard from 6AM-10AM for this event. Over a dozen Brotherhood members cooked and served the food.

On 03/11/25 about 30 people, including Brotherhood members and members of their families, gathered at the temple to pack Yom Hashoah candles for delivery to all members of the congregation. Prior to packing the candles everyone who showed up was treated to a pizza dinner provided by the Brotherhood.

The candles will be delivered to homes via 167 separate routes by volunteer drivers from the Brotherhood in time to be lit on the evening of 04/23/25 which is when the annual observance begins.

This year inspiration for our work was enhanced by the presence of Rabbi Roger Klein who also agreed to deliver candles for Route 99 with has the obvious numerical significance. The numeric value of the Hebrew word 'amen' is precisely 99. Jews say “amen” to indicate agreement with what has is being said or done.

This is why some people write checks to charity with the amount of $99 to show their agreement with the work of the organization.

When you get your candles, please be sure to consider writing a check, for any amount, to donate to the Brotherhood to help pay for the expenses of the Yom Hashoah candle project. Funds received in excess of expenses are donated annually to the temple religious school.

The annual project of obtaining, packing, and delivering the candles is spearheaded by Lester Potash.
