A LITTLE TOUCH OF HISTORY
Doswell Cathedral #2 started in November 1966 when Bishop James I. Doswell placed the Late Mother Georgiana James over a mission work initially located at 112 Green Street, Baltimore, Maryland. The first members of this work were her family: Deacon Walter James, Missionary Georgia Casey, Brother Cornelius James, Sister Jerelene James, and Michael James. The work experien
ced growth with the addition of Mother Veronica Stovall and Mother Doris James, and her family. Brother Cornelius James was 12 years of age at the time and wore quite a few hats as the church continued to grow. He served as the first drummer of the church; he sang in the church choir under the leadership of Sister Hawthorn, he was the church trustee as well as the janitor and church chauffeur. Brother James was a liberal giver of the work of the Lord, and he was a willing worker in whatever he was asked to do. The church was at the Green Street location for more than 10 years and then later moved to Shirley Avenue. At this time Brother James was then Elder James and was also married to Missionary Olivia James. They both continued to assist Mother and Deacon James in the work of the ministry. After the passing of Bishop Doswell, on January 8, 1989, with the full support of Mother and Deacon James, Elder Cornelius James, Sr. was appointed as Pastor of the church and the name was changed to the New Solid Rock, COGIC. The ministry experienced the passing of several pioneers of the Gospel which included Mother Georgianna James, Deacon Walter James, Sister Juanita James, Mother Veronica Stovall, Mother Mary Turner, and Mother Bessie Dixon. But through it all God continued to be with Pastor and 1st Lady James and He continued to bless the work of their hands. Both Pastor Cornelius and Lady James have battled many sicknesses, persecutions and trials during the course of 35 years of pastoral ministry. They have seen people come and go, but God was true to His word found in 1st Peter 5:10 – After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. The church is now located at 5300 York Road and the name has been changed to the Powerhouse Worship Center, Church of God in Christ. As we look forward to the future we move, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. For we know that God has truly been kind and gracious to the ministry and today we rejoice in the fact that “We’ve Come This Far By Faith.”
