It's fascinating how similar myths and creatures arise from enitrely different cultures. Are they archetypes from our collective unconscious? Ancient ways that still live inside us today?

25 Days of Winter and Christmas Folklore!
Namahage (生剥げ, なまはげ)
The Namahage is pretty scary looking, but serves a valuable role. Originally thought of as kami, today they are depicted like Oni (ogres) dressed in straw attire. They go from house to house on New Year’s threatening anyone who has been bad or lazy (especially children). They also visit newlywed couples, who serve the creatures saki before sending them on their way.
They barge into homes, brandishing knives, spouting things like “Are there any bad kids around?” Their name relates to peeling blisters, because lazy people who sat by the fire all winter might get blisters.
Scarier than Santa but less lethal than Krampus, the Namahage appear in festivals and are often used to teach children lessons (the most important probably being to obey their parents). Art by Yuko Shimizu
