In 2009, 4 1/2 year old Sophie Gallagher became concerned for Austin's homeless children and adults after seeing people sleeping under the Ben White overpasses. After much conversation, Sophie decided she wanted to collect blankets so those sleeping in the elements would have some warmth, and bears, so that homeless children would have a warm, safe lovey with which to sleep. This year a new friend
, Berkeley, volunteered to team up with Sophie to further the cause. Sophie and Berkeley would appreciate any help you could offer toward helping Austin's homeless. All donations collected are presented to Front Steps and Salvation Army, the two main organization serving Austin's homeless adults and families. Due to health and sanitation concerns, this year we are asking that only new items be donated. All donations will be collected December 20th, and delivered to the helping organizations. Here's how you can help:
*Donate New Blankets or Bears (or other stuffed lovies)
*Put up a collection box in your workplace, place of worship, scouting group, or any other spot, and agree to collect the box. We will pick it up from you on December 20th.
*Host a holiday party and ask that everyone attending bring a Blanket or Bear as "admission" :-)
*Have a Happy Hour and ask all in attendance to bring an item for donation
*Collect money from friends and family who may not be able to get to the store, and buy blankets or bears the next time you go shopping
The Blankets & Bears Compassion Project is not a 501c3 or anything else for that matter, just kiddos wanting to help others, and spreading the message that you can make a difference, one blanket at a time. Please let us know if you have questions. Feel free to contact us on this page, or you can contact Sophie's mom, Vanessa Gallagher,at [email protected]
Thank you so much for helping!
