Name: Becky Edwards

Becky serves as a parapro at Blythe Elementary and is extremely active in Blythe Baptist church. Her heart is truly called to serve the homeless. She serves with Compass For Hope almost every Sunday but during Helene she upped her game. She served lunch to the homeless on October 1st when virtually no resources were available to the homeless in the days following the storm. She again fed them on the 4th and continues to serve at food distributions including yesterday where lots of West Augusta residents are still in dire need.

We are pleased to share another Hurricane Helene Hero nomination!

Name: Khan Hassan

Khan is an extraordinary young man, and I am proud to nominate him as a Helene Hero. Before the hurricane, he had already distinguished himself by completing Georgia Organics' Young Farmer Apprentice Program. He dedicated his time to assisting elder farmers with planting, harvesting, and transporting their produce to markets in South Augusta, allowing them to focus on tending their farms. His deep commitment to fresh food access and his passion for connecting farmers with customers were the driving forces behind the creation of the STOP Mobile Farmers Market this summer.
When the storm hit, Khan didn’t hesitate—he immediately reached out to check on the elder farmers and assess the damage to their fields and structures. The very next day, he was out with his chainsaw, working tirelessly to clear debris, open pathways, and repair fences.
In mid-October, Khan was instrumental in a large-scale effort by the Southeastern African-American Farmers Organic Network (SAAFON) to clear debris from the historic Boggs Academy campus in Keysville, GA. He mobilized his network, bringing in a food truck, a pallet of water, and other vital resources to support the effort. Khan’s unwavering dedication to his community and his passion for service make him an exceptional candidate for this honor.

This is the first of several heroes nominated for their acts of service during Hurricane Helene. Check back often for more stories and go to cityhopealliance.org/helene-heroes to nominate your hero!

Name: Dawson Rose

Dawson and his friends got up at the crack of dawn the day after the hurricane hit and went out and started clearing roadways and people’s driveways who had been trapped in. He is always more than willing to help with whatever is needed without ever being asked. He sees that there is a need and gets it done. He was recently assigned as security at a food distribution center at To***co Road and Windsor Spring and was there to just make sure everything went smoothly but he went above and beyond to help them pass stuff out. He’s a truly amazing kid and does so much for the community that often goes unnoticed.

We are pleased to share another Hurricane Helene Hero nomination!

Name: Taj Hassan

Taj Hassan, co-owner of The Stop Food Truck, is a true pillar of the South Augusta community. Before Helene, he was a familiar face at the South Augusta Farmers Market, always greeting guests with a warm smile and a song. His team became a favorite at the market, offering a diverse range of soul, ethnic, and trendy foods, all prepared with healthy, locally sourced ingredients and free from harmful additives—at a price that made good food accessible to everyone.

In the weeks following the storm, Taj and his team took their mission on the road, setting up pop-up food stands in rural communities where residents either had limited transportation or no access to healthy food options. While donation sites were plentiful, many offered canned foods high in salt, fried items full of grease, or just meat and bread with no vegetables. Taj’s team filled the gap by providing fresh, nutritious meals to those who needed them most.

In total, his team assisted in the distribution of over 2,000 meals and 4,000 pounds of fresh produce to rural and homebound residents across three counties. Their efforts went beyond simply providing food—they brought nourishment, hope, and a sense of connection to communities in need. Taj’s commitment to healthy, accessible food continues to make a lasting impact in the region.

We are pleased to share another Hurricane Helene Hero nomination!

Name: Shell Berry

Shell Berry, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for the CSRA, should be nominated for the Hurricane Helene Hero Award because of her unwavering commitment to the Augusta community in its time of greatest need. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Berry mobilized resources with incredible determination, raising over $7 million, including a significant contribution from the Augusta National Golf Club. These funds became a lifeline for countless residents, distributed through the Community Crisis Fund to empower local nonprofits and provide direct support to those most affected.

Beyond raising funds, Berry’s leadership was rooted in compassion and action. Under her guidance, the Community Foundation ensured people had access to critical essentials like food, water, shelter, and medical care. She also brought hope and unity to the community by sharing transparent updates on social media, keeping everyone informed and connected. Shell Berry’s tireless dedication, compassionate leadership, and ability to inspire action in others make her a true Hurricane Helene Hero, and her impact on Augusta will be felt for years to come.
