Marking the New Ecclesiastical Year, September 1st, is a most significant day for our Church and the entirety of humanity. Our Ecumenical Patriarchate, and especially His All-Holiness Bartholomew, for decades have been emphasizing our relationship with the Earth and all creation, as the God-given environment in which the human family is called to serve as stewards of creation. This contains all that we hold dear on our “Big, Blue Marble” – the land and the seas, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the creatures with whom we share this planet.

We are indeed blessed that we have a “Green” Patriarch who understands the sacred nature of creation, which we celebrate and acknowledge in every icon fashioned for the sanctification of the Faithful. His All-Holiness has been leading the way for a truly Patristic and theological ecology that applies not only across the Christian world in all its diversity, but throughout the interfaith and interspiritual communities as well.

The devastating fires across North America and the recent tragedy in Nepal, where a glacial collapse unleashed a catastrophic cascade of ice, rock, mud, and floodwaters, are stark reminders of the intensifying consequences of climate change, the fragility of our common home, and our sacred responsibility to care for it.

As we commence this New Ecclesiastical Year, may we each pause for a moment to remember the created order with which God has graced our lives, and may we each, in our own way, commit to protecting, enhancing, restoring, and safeguarding the precious gift of the created universe, beginning with our Mother Earth, above whom “the heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims the work of His hands” (Psalm 18:1 LXX).

As we celebrate the glorious Feast of the Lord’s Transfiguration, let us listen closely to His Message for us. He Who is the Fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets spoke with the Lawgiver, Moses, and the Prophet Elias. He spoke to them of His own “exodus” (Luke 9:31), His preparing to “pass over” from death to Life. Peter, Iakovos, and John were overcome by the experience, and Peter tried to capture it in the three “tabernacles” he unwittingly suggested they build for the Lord and his heavenly interlocutors. But the vision they were granted of the resplendent Lord of Glory was not for them alone. Rather, it was a foretaste of the Resurrection. And so may it be for us as we celebrate this major Feast of our Master Christ. May we recognize that the sacrifice of the Cross is the door to Eternal Life, and behold the Uncreated Light of God in our hearts, that we may become living examples of the Message that was unveiled on the Holy Mountain Tabor.

On July 30, the Archon Ecumenical Patriarchate Global Initiative (The Sprouts Program) announced the inaugural Ecumenical Patriarch Poster Contest, inviting Orthodox students ages 5–18 to create original artwork celebrating His All‑Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s 35 years of spiritual leadership and his unwavering commitment to protecting God’s creation as the Green Patriarch.

As this is the first year of the contest, parishes and schools nationwide are warmly encouraged to participate and inspire young artists to express their faith, creativity, and love for God’s world. Eligible participants include Sunday School students from all Orthodox jurisdictions under the spiritual guidance of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, as well as students in Orthodox Christian K–12 schools and other Christian schools with a strong Orthodox presence.

Τον πρώτο Διαγωνισμό Αφίσας για τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη προκήρυξαν στις 30 Ιουλίου, μέσω του εκπαιδευτικού προγράμματος Sprout, οι Άρχοντες Οφφικιάλιοι της Μ.τ.Χ.Ε. Ο διαγωνισμός απευθύνεται σε Ορθόδοξους μαθητές ηλικίας 5 έως 18 ετών, οι οποίοι καλούνται να δημιουργήσουν ένα δικό τους έργο, με αφορμή τα 35 χρόνια της Πατριαρχίας του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη κ. Βαρθολομαίου και του έργου του ως «Πράσινου Πατριάρχη».

Καθώς πρόκειται για την πρώτη διοργάνωση του διαγωνισμού, οι ενορίες και τα σχολεία σε ολόκληρη την επικράτεια καλούνται να λάβουν μέρος και να ενθαρρύνουν τα παιδιά και τους νέους να εκφράσουν μέσα από την τέχνη την πίστη τους, τη δημιουργικότητα, καθώς και την αγάπη τους για τη φύση. Δικαίωμα συμμετοχής έχουν οι μαθητές των κατηχητικών σχολείων από όλες τις Ορθόδοξες εκκλησιαστικές δικαιοδοσίες που τελούν υπό την πνευματική καθοδήγηση του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου, καθώς και οι μαθητές των Ορθόδοξων σχολείων πρωτοβάθμιας και δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης ή άλλων χριστιανικών σχολείων με έντονη Ορθόδοξη παρουσία.

Today, we joyfully embark upon the Fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos. These days of the Paraklesis, when we supplicate her to intercede for our lives, our families, our communities, and our world is a time of spiritual intensity. Thus we fast, in order to soften our hearts and to prepare for the “Little Pascha” of her passing into eternal life. She leaves this world where her motherhood is limited, to reign from Heaven as the Mother of us all. By her holy intercessions, may we find our hope restored, our faith strengthened, and our love deepened.

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America has announced the appointment of Rev. Protopresbyter Gregory Gilbert as the new Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York, New York, effective September 1, 2026. Currently serving as Chancellor of the Metropolis of New Jersey, Fr. Gregory brings to the Cathedral and its ministries a wealth of academic, liturgical, and pastoral experience, together with a deep love for the Orthodox Christian faith and the life of the Church.

Archbishop Elpidophoros has also announced the appointment of Reverend Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Throne Elias Villis as Acting Chancellor for the Metropolis of New Jersey, effective August 16, 2026, to continue the pastoral and administrative care of the Metropolis. Fr. Elias will also continue to serve as Chancellor of the Archdiocesan District.

My Beloved Brother Clergy,

It is with a heavy heart, yet with steadfast hope in the Resurrection, that I write to inform you of the falling asleep in the Lord of another one of our beloved brothers. This Friday morning, our brother and concelebrant, the Rev. Protopresbyter John Manuel, Proistamenos of St. Nicholas Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, fell asleep in the Lord. Trusting in the goodness of God and His divine providence, we commend the soul of Fr. John to Christ, who "is risen from the dead and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep."

Fr. John was a joy-filled servant of the Lord who faithfully shepherded his flock with love, compassion, and unwavering dedication. He was also a cherished brother priest whose kindness, wisdom, and encouragement strengthened us all in our ministry. His passing will be deeply felt throughout our clergy brotherhood and across our sacred Metropolis of New Jersey.

His Eminence, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, extends his paternal love and heartfelt condolences to Presvytera Karen; their children and grandchildren; the entire Manuel family; and especially to our brother clergy, their sons, Fr. Thomas Manuel and Fr. Nicholas Manuel, as well as their son-in-law, Fr. Savvas Mandeville. His Eminence asks all of our clergy brotherhood to join him in offering fervent prayers for the repose of the servant of God, John the Protopresbyter.

Further information regarding the funeral arrangements will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

May our Lord grant rest to the soul of His faithful servant, the Protopresbyter John, in a place of light, a place of green pasture, and a place of refreshment, where all sickness, sorrow, and sighing have fled away.

Communiqué of the Holy Eparchial Synod, July 22, 2026:

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros presided today over an extraordinary session of the Holy Eparchial Synod, convened by videoconference following the joyful announcement of the election of His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey as Archbishop of Canada.

The Archbishop and the members of the Holy Eparchial Synod expressed their profound gratitude to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and to the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Mother Church for the selection of one of the Hierarchs of our Sacred Archdiocese and a member of the Holy Eparchial Synod as the successor to Archbishop Sotirios in this most significant Eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne.

Accordingly, the procedure prescribed by the relevant provisions of the Charter of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America was initiated. With the concurrence of the members of the Holy Eparchial Synod, the Archbishop was appointed Locum Tenens of the now-vacant Holy Metropolis of New Jersey. The matter of electing a new Metropolitan for the Holy Metropolis will be discussed at a forthcoming session of the Holy Eparchial Synod.

Finally, effective immediately, the clergy of the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey are instructed to commemorate, in accordance with the prescribed ecclesiastical order, the venerable name of the Ecumenical Patriarch at all divine services and sacred rites.

Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος και τα μέλη της Επαρχιακής Συνόδου εξέφρασαν την ευγνωμοσύνην των προς την Α. Θ. Παναγιότητα τον Οικουμενικόν Πατριάρχην κ. κ. Μητροπόλεως Νέας Ιερσέης, κατόπιν διαγνώμης των μελών της Ι. Επαρχιακής Συνόδου, ορίσθη ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος, ενώ το θέμα της πληρώσεως της Ι. ταύτης Μητροπόλεως θα συζητηθεί είς προσεχή συνεδρίαν.

Τέλος, από σήμερον καλούνται οι ιερείς της Ι. Μητροπόλεως Νέας Ιερσέης όπως μνημονεύουν εις απάσας τας ιεράς ακολουθίας και ιεροπραξίας, κατά την τάξιν, του σεπτού ονόματος του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχου.
