Our Coalition of women is set out to organize the process and raise the money it takes to build a Habitat for Humanity House in either Cobb, Paulding, or Douglas County, GA. How Habitat Works:
Habitat for Humanity is NOT a charity. It is a not-for-profit, Christian-based (and non-discriminating) organization f
ocused on providing affordable housing for qualified applicants utilizing volunteer labor and donations / sponsorship for the building materials. The applicants for a Habitat for Humanity House must be first-time homebuyers, must live or work in the country, pass a debt and income requirement, must put in 300 hours of sweat equity building their own home, must take home ownership and economics classes, and must faithfully make payments on their 20-25 year *interest free* loan. While applicants are being interviewed by Habitat, a group of organizers from the community called a Coalition is formed. They are responsible for organizing the actual build and fundraising for the building materials required to build the house. The funding required for our ALL WOMEN build is $65,000.
$40,000 for infrastructure and professional services is provided by Habitat for Humanity. The monetary cost of the house ends up at $105,000, so that is the mortgage the new homeowner is responsible for. They will end up with a home worth $135,000 because the volunteer labor required to build the home is worth $30,000.
