12 Degrees North Follow our family as we do God's work in Barranquilla, Colombia through business and immigrant/refuge

05/29/2026

Happy Friday!!! We hope you are doing well and having a great morning. Our family has a few prayer requests, and we would be grateful if you would lift these things up with us.

1. Presidential elections are taking place this Sunday, and this is a very important moment for the country. Please be praying for peace, wisdom, and stability during this time.

2. McKinley has gotten progressively sicker over the last week with something we still have not been able to identify. Today we needed to take her to the emergency room so she could be seen sooner instead of waiting another week or more for a pediatric appointment. Please pray for answers, and healing for her.

3. This coming Monday, we have to turn over the rental home we have lived in for the past eight years to the real estate agency. We still have a lot to do to get everything ready, and the pressure is definitely on. Please pray for strength, endurance, and grace as we finish this transition.

4. Angel's visa process has finally been submitted after the new paperwork requirements. Now the payment system is down nationally, so we have to wait for it to be up and running. Please pray that the process will finish smoothly!

Thank you all for loving our family so well and for praying with us. It means more than you know.

Over the last few days, our family has walked through something we didn’t see coming. It's getting to be a trend for us! 🫣😆

On Friday, during the U17 national club volleyball tournament here in Colombia, we learned that Reagan was being challenged by a coach from another team, not because of her play, but because she’s American.

To give a little context, Reagan was approved over a year ago by the Colombian volleyball federation to participate in national events. All of her paperwork was in order. She has been playing the entire season without issue. And not just playing, thriving. Her team was undefeated going into that match, and Reagan was playing some of the best volleyball we’ve ever seen from her. Confident, focused, leading well, and contributing in a big way to her team’s success.

But after her team beat this coach’s team, the defending 2nd place team (last year's tournament), he went looking for a rule to stop her from playing! And he found one that, apparently, had been overlooked.

He formally petitioned against her.

What followed was a full day of conversations, arguments, and waiting with a lot of people involved, unfortunately. By the end of the day, the decision came down. We had been praying for a good outcome... But it was ruled that Reagan was no longer eligible to play. Not just for this tournament, but for any national events moving forward.

In one moment, she lost the opportunity to finish the tournament, to continue with her team in Bolívar, and even the chance to be considered for the national team.

That night, we sat down as a family to talk about it. It was one of the hardest conversations we’ve ever had. There were a lot of tears. Not just from Reagan, but from all of us. As parents, you want to protect your kids, to fight for them, to fix things. And sometimes you can’t. And even harder was the fact that she had worked so hard for this, and her dreams were getting closer to being realized.

Trying to explain to your daughter that someone made a decision that affects her future, and did it with the wrong intentions, is something I wouldn’t wish for again, that is for sure. We’re hurting. And if we’re honest, we’re angry too.

But we’re also proud.

Proud of how Reagan has played. Proud of how she’s carried herself in such a tough time. Proud of the way she’s handled something that no young athlete should have to go through.

And here’s what says the most about her...

She stayed with her team until the very end. She supported them, encouraged them, and never checked out, even after everything that happened. Her coaches and team gave her the "out clause" to leave due to how hard it would be to sit and watch.

The cool part... her team went on to win the national championship!
That doesn’t take away the pain of what happened. But it says everything about her character.

We don’t know exactly what comes next yet. But we do know this moment won’t define her.

And we trust that God is still writing her story, even when we don’t understand the chapter we’re in.

We hope all of our 12 Degrees North family/friends are doing well and that life is treating you well. We wanted to share a clear financial update so you know exactly where we are right now. Yep, just pulling off the band-aid!!!

At this point, we are about $1,370 short each month in recurring giving/monetary donations to be able to stay on the field here in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Over the past 8 to 10 months, we’ve had to rely on our reserves that people have given to make up the difference, and those reserves have now been depleted to almost nothing (less than $5,000 total).

So here’s what we need moving forward.

The first is monthly support. That consistent giving is what allows us to stay here long-term, and closing that $1,300 gap is the main goal over the next few weeks.

The second is one-time gifts. If that’s a new term for you, it simply means a single donation, not something that repeats monthly. These gifts help cover immediate needs and allow us to rebuild what we’ve had to use over the last several months.

We’ve had 3 new people step in recently to support, which has been a big encouragement. We are also in communication with 2 different churches that have shown interest in partnering with us financially, which would be a big help. We would love to see that number continue to grow. Another huge way you can help is through connections. If you know a church, missions pastor, business owner, or anyone who has a heart for this kind of work, an introduction would go a long way right now.

Our goal is to stay here in Barranquilla and continue what we’re doing without having to return to the U.S. to fundraise again.

If you’ve been praying for us or supporting us, thank you. We mean that.

And if you feel led to step in, whether through monthly giving, a one-time gift, or connecting us with the right people, we would be incredibly grateful.

Our annual missions conference looked a little different this year. For the first time, we combined Colombia and Peru with South America Mission and I don’t think any of us fully knew what to expect. But it was really really special.

You get that many people together, all in the same missions world, and it is so unique.

One of my favorite parts… watching our girls.

They had an absolute blast. Getting to be with some of their best friends, the kind they don’t get to see often and it was just fun to watch. It’s crazy how fast they pick right back up like no time has passed. Lots of laughing, running around, late nights.

At the same time… I’m not going to pretend it was all easy.

Because we were surrounded by people who get it. Missionaries who have walked through loss, transitions, things falling apart, things not going how you planned. And there wasn’t a lot of “fixing” or advice. It was just a whole lot of listening and praying and caring.

And honestly, we needed that more than we probably realized.

We walked away tired… but full and supported. Now back to what Barranquilla has in store for us.

We wanted to catch everyone up who has been following what has been happening over the last few weeks and praying for us.

The last two weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind.
Since the landlord took over the Coventus space, we have spent most of our time emptying the office and figuring out what to do with everything that was inside. We have taken out most of the things we originally put into the space and have started selling extra equipment and furniture just to help stabilize things a bit.

The situation with the landlord has continued to be complicated. They are trying to get as much out of us as possible and have been threatening lawsuits if we take too much from the space. Technically the law is actually on our side in many of these areas, but the threats have made the process stressful as we try to sort everything out.

We should be finishing negotiations with them sometime this week. They are still asking for things that we simply cannot do at this point, so we will see where everything ultimately lands.

One really encouraging part of this whole situation has been the people around us. Local church planters, pastors, and friends have shown up in some incredible ways. People have stopped by, taken us out to eat, prayed with us, given us hugs, and reminded us that we are not alone. That has meant more than I can say.
A lot of people have asked what comes next.

Technically the landlord shut down the space, not the company. We do not have a lot of money to restart, but we are beginning to think about what starting over could look like. God has continued to provide in small ways through the sale of furniture and equipment and even some personal support that has come in over the last few weeks.

If you are someone who prays, we would really appreciate your prayers as we try to figure out what rebuilding might look like.

This has been a really hard season, but we are grateful for the people who have walked through it with us.

The last few days have been brutal.

I want to share this openly because so many of you have prayed for us, supported us, encouraged us, and carried us through this season.

Coventus our co-working space is closing.

And honestly, it still doesn’t feel real.

What makes this even harder to say is that this wasn’t a clean or dignified ending. Our landlord came in and forcibly took over the space, even though we were only two months behind on rent. There was no long runway, no graceful exit, no time to process. It was sudden, jarring, and painful.

I am still trying to wrap my head around it all at this point and why God would "allow" it to happen.

Coventus was my pride and joy. It held so many dreams, conversations, late nights, prayers, plans, and hope. And to have it end this way has been deeply disorienting. The last few days have been exhausting emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

To be really honest, right now it feels like a waste.
I know there was good done. I know things were accomplished. I know people were helped and relationships were built. But in this moment, the pain overshadows all of that. I am not ready to rush past that feeling or tie it up neatly.

If you have been praying for us, please know how grateful we are. If you have supported us in any way financially, emotionally, or simply by believing in what we were trying to build, thank you. Truly. We have felt it, even in the middle of this mess.

Right now we are just taking things one step at a time. Trying to process what happened, care for the people affected, and figure out what comes next without pretending this does not hurt.

This has been a really hard few days. We are tired. We are sad.

Thank you for walking with us in this part of the story.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude. This season reminds us that God came near, full of grace, hope, purpose and that truth continues to shape everything we do.
To our ministry partners, donors, friends, and prayer warriors: thank you. Truly. You are part of the story God is writing through 12 Degrees North. Your prayers, generosity, encouragement, and faithfulness make it possible for us to keep showing up, loving well, and saying “yes” to what God is doing.

Christmas is about light breaking into darkness, hope being born in unexpected places, and God reminding us that He is with us. We’re so thankful to walk this journey with such an incredible community.
May your homes be full of laughter, your hearts full of peace, and your lives anchored in the joy that only Christ brings.

🎁❤️ Jesus is the greatest gift and we celebrate Him today.

With love and gratitude,

Joel, Angel, Taylor, Reagan, McKinley

Well, we have some pretty cool news that we want to share with everybody!

Taylor (our oldest) has been formally accepted into Impact 360 Institute, a gap year program that is part of Chick Fil A's foundation. It is a huge deal if she gets in as it is highly competitive. She worked incredibly hard to make it happen. We couldn't be more proud of her as this next step will equip her to figure out what she wants to do for college.

The great news is not only will she be getting spiritually equipped to share her faith and be influential for the kingdom of God but she will also be getting college credits and it will open a lot of doors to get scholarships to some great universities across the United states.

You can check out more here at their website! It's some pretty cool stuff. https://www.impact360institute.org/

Good morning all! We hope you all are doing very well.

Joel was blessed with the chance to spend some time in one of the local Christian schools here in Barranquilla. He was invited to share to a group of high schoolers on translating for short term mission groups. They were so receptive and excited.

This week they will be hosting a group of 18 Americans that will be doing some great work in low-income neighborhoods.
