The Authority of God

Job 28:28
To man he said, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To depart from evil is understanding.”

The word “fear” in today’s verse can also mean deep respect and acknowledgement of authority.God is the Creator and Giver of all life. He knows what is best for our bodies and happiness.Society runs on respect and authority. The laws, for the most part, are there to protect everyone. Stop signs and traffic signals help prevent many accidents, health inspections help prevent sickness, and labor laws help workers get fair pay and hours.Similarly, God’s laws and directions protect us.Putting God first in our lives helps us see things in perspective. Honoring our parents and being respectful of others leads to longer life and less stress. Believing God loves us helps us see our own value in God’s eyes. All of this begins with the deep respect and acknowledgement of God’s authority. Recognize His power and love. Let God into your life. He wants to bless you with joy, peace, and happiness. All He needs is your permission.Let Him in today.

Daniel 3:17
“If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.”

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were in Babylonian exile and had come to a crossroad. They had only two choices: bow down to the king’s golden image or be killed. The time had come to worship the image. Everyone around them had bowed down.Boldly, they chose to stand for God and allow their faith to make them courageous. They did not know what the outcome would be. They had disobeyed the king’s decree and as a result, the three of them expected to be punished by a painful death. But though the king of Babylon had condemned them to die, the King of the Universe preserved their lives!Their bravery turned out to be a blessing. When the king looked at the furnace, he noticed that the three men he had thrown into it were now four! The fourth man looked like the Son of God. Instead of dying, the three men were alive and it was clear that God was on their side (read the whole story in Daniel 3).God is on your side, too. When there seems to be no victory in sight, remember to look with eyes of faith and bravely take your stand. Jesus promised never to leave you or forsake you. He will empower you to be fearless and walk through the fires of life without getting burned.

Respect and Listen to Your Parents.

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with a promise: “that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.”

In today’s passage, the apostle Paul encourages us to respect, listen to, and obey our mother and father. He also reminds us that God promises if we do so, He will bless us abundantly.Jesus didn’t just give Paul words of instruction; He gave him words of experience as well. Among Jesus’ last words were those expressing concern that His mother would be cared for after He was gone (John 19:26-27).When you love Jesus with a deep and sincere love, treating your parents as we’ve been commanded to do will be second nature. When you are close to Jesus, you will be a person who brings your mother, father, and God a great sense of pride and joy.The Bible is clear: if our parents are at odds with God’s teaching, honoring God must always come first. However, honoring our parents is a God-given blessing. Even now that I’m grown, I also know how much I wanted to make my mom proud of me.Honoring your parents is to honor God as well.

Contagious Joy

1 John 1:1-4

Jesus calls us to be His “witnesses.” When some Christians hear this word, they worry that they need exceptional skill or charisma in order to share the good news with others. Yet to witness is not to merely speak of the “plan of salvation” to someone. The word literally means to see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception; to testify; bear witness to; give or afford evidence of. When John wrote that he was sharing what he had experienced first-hand, he was saying, “I am full of joy because of the experience of knowing Jesus, and I want to invite you to share in that joy!”
When you’re in love with someone, you are excited about the relationship and time spent together. Likewise, when you’re in love with Jesus, you can’t keep to yourself the joy that comes from knowing Him—it just spills over, bearing witness and strengthening other believers. In fact, as you give testimony of who God is and how He’s working in your life, it makes no difference whether you speak quietly or with great exuberance: in their spirit, Christians will pick up on the deep, genuine gladness in your heart that goes beyond natural happiness. And people who don’t yet know the Lord will find themselves hungering for the relationship you have. In that way, they will be drawn to His Spirit in you.

Witnessing is not a matter of eloquence or talent. It’s an overflow of the personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is conforming you to His image. As you allow the Holy Spirit to increasingly express His life and power through you, contagious joy will be “fruit” of His indwelling presence.
