A Daily Letter to My Lord

Dear God:
I read that young sunflowers face the sun and follow it east to west until they are 'adults'. What a concept...to face the sun...and if we spell it SON...we could learn so much following him all day long from morning till night. Please help us...remind us... that you cover the whole sky no matter what time of day it is. Help us look to you throughout our day so we can follow your path and stay focused in the right direction. As we follow the sun across the sky we can see the many opportunities you send our way. Today I am asking that you help us follow the son all day long like a young sunflower. We will grow and stand tall as we learn all there is to learn abut you. Thank you for this day...and the 'sonshine' that will brighten our day with love and joy. In Jesus' name, I pray. Am

Ascension Day // Acts 1:11
by Mark Jordan

Today is Ascension Day, when we remember Jesus' ascension into Heaven with a promise to return. Ascension Day can feel like a strange moment in the story of Jesus. After the resurrection, everything is building with hope and excitement—and then suddenly, Jesus is taken up into heaven. That must have been another mind-bending event to behold, because it left the disciples standing still and staring. In Acts 1:11, two angels say to the disciples, “'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!'” It’s a gentle but clear nudge: don’t just stand there. Of course they stood there, trying to process it all. But Jesus had already given them their next step: wait for the Holy Spirit and then go be His witnesses.

It’s easy for us to do the same thing spiritually. We can get stuck looking up —waiting and wondering without moving. We think about what God has done and what He promised to do, but we can hesitate to take the next step He’s already made clear. Ascension Day reminds us that faith isn’t meant to be static. Jesus may have ascended, but His mission for us requires action. So don’t just stand still looking up waiting and wondering. Move forward in what He’s already said and trust Him with what comes next!

A Daily Letter to My Lord

Dear God:
Two things have come to me recently...to think about and to remember. One is that you are present with us...every day, all day. The other is that we must intentionally turn to you in the midst of our busy and ordinary days. Please help us pay attention to what you say and do. Give us opportunities to share what we feel and how we know you are in our presence. Speak to us when we specifically need to hear you...in the middle of a meeting or as we are stopped at a red light. As we look at a yellow/orange tulip, remind us that you created them so we could enjoy the blooms as they grow. Thank you for the reminders you bring to us that you are alive and well and living among us! In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

No Leftover Wasted // John 6:12
by Mark Jordan

Happy National Crouton Day! You know, there’s something kind of funny about croutons -- they’re basically just leftover bread, nothing fancy, nothing fresh. But instead of being tossed out, they’re seasoned, toasted, and suddenly they’re the best part of the salad.

Legend holds a knight-turned-diplomat named Sir Edgar Crouton was served soup and bread while dining with the King of England. In his haste he accidentally dropped pieces of bread into his soup. Unable to fish them out without embarrassing himself, he did the only thing he could think of: he ate it all, bread, soup, and everything together. And just like that… croutons were “born.” Not exactly elegant, but definitely resourceful.

In John 6:12, after Jesus feeds thousands of people, He tells His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” That’s easy to overlook, but it says something important about how God works. He doesn’t just provide in abundance...He also values what remains.

Sometimes life can leave us feeling like the leftovers. Maybe it’s a missed opportunity, a season that didn’t go how we planned, or parts of our story we’d rather throw away. But God doesn’t see wasted pieces, He sees potential. In His hands, even what feels stale can be renewed, repurposed, and used for something good. So today, whether you’re tossing croutons on a salad or just needing a reminder—nothing in your life is beyond God’s use. He’s really good at turning leftovers into something meaningful.

A Daily Letter to My Lord

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord"... Jeremiah 229:11

Dear God:
Yes, I know you have plans for me. I just hope I can live up to them and be all I can be. I want to do what you know is best for me. I want to be challenged enough to make life interesting. And also I want to have the abilities I need to do what you ask. Your plans will fulfill me, and protect me. Your plans will lead me to be compassionate and encouraging...giving others hope and a purpose as I serve you by serving others. Thank you for blessing me with opportunities that keep me on the path you have for me...and the chance to follow your plan. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

National Limerick Day // Mark 12:30-31, Matthew 5:16
By Mark Jordan

Today is National Limerick Day, an homage to Edward Lear who created and popularized the witty, and often whimsical, style of poetry. I decided to try my hand at a limerick reflecting God’s light and love. After a bit of time and a little help, this is what I came up with.

To love God first is the very best
And our neighbors, too, among the rest
For when we seek to shine God’s light
Our very lives glow so bright
That’s how in Christ our lives confess

May we do as Jesus taught in Mark 12:30-31, loving God and neighbor alike while letting our light so shine so people will know that God is real and really good (Matthew 5:16)!

A Daily Letter to My Lord

Dear God:
I was reminded today that you are working on me, in me and through me every day. You have been for a long time...and you are not finished yet. So, what are you going to do with me today? I am up and ready. Please help me see the work you want me to do. See how you are changing me to become a better disciple. Help me realize that your nudges are real and I need to feel them and move with them, not fight them. Lead me so I can follow. Teach me so I can learn. And give me opportunities to do for you what you have done for me. Help me open up my heart to feel all you have for me and to accept your instructions head on. Thank you for every day that I can experience your presence within me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Check Yourself before you Wreck Yourself // Proverbs 16:18
By Mark Jordan

World Ego Awareness Day is kind of a funny idea—until you realize how quietly ego can shape just about everything we do. Our over-inflated ego shows up when we have to win every argument; can’t admit we were wrong; and/or when we care more about being right than being loving. The Bible puts it pretty bluntly: “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). This advice for us to be aware of the damage our ego can do isn’t just a warning, it’s a recognition about how life works. Pride has a way of blinding us. It convinces us we’re above correction, beyond growth, or somehow the exception to the rule. That’s usually right before things start to unravel, so we need to check ourselves before we wreck ourselves. Humbly admitting we are not the center of the universe actually ushers us into the place where real strength lives. It’s the ability to listen, to learn, to admit when we missed it, and to put others ahead of ourselves. Where ego says, “I’ve got this,” humility prays, “God, I need You.” So, on this Ego Awareness Day, check in with yourself to discern where might pride be getting in the way. Meet God there and allow Him to reveal something better!

A Daily Letter to My Lord

Mothers' Day

Dear God:
First of all thank you for choosing me to be a mom. It's always been good...challenging at times, yes...but always good. I look around me and my relationships, touching all the women I know and am blessed with each and every one. Some you chose to be biological mothers, others you chose to be adoptive mothers, and others have been mothers to someone else's child. No matter which we are, we have helped with spelling and math tests, reading and writing...and then first crushes. We have encouraged and given hope to the next generation. Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the village that surrounds our children and helps them grow and mature into adulthood. It's amazing. And with every day, we have been blessed as we have blessed those younger than we are...no matter how long we have been mothers. Thank you for this day that we recognize all mothers. In Jesus' name, I pray.

Happy Mother’s Day // Isaiah 66:13
By Mark Jordan

Happy Mother’s Day! I am celebrating the wonderful models of motherhood I have in my life, from my own mother, Tiffany, her mother who loves me as one of her own, my grandmothers who are with Jesus today, as well as those who have been mother figures to me throughout my life. Today is a chance to pause and recognize the kind of love that shows up every single day—often quietly, often unnoticed, but always faithfully. It’s the love that sacrifices, nurtures, corrects, and comforts all at the same time. The Bible captures this kind of love beautifully: “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you…” (Isaiah 66:13).

That’s a powerful picture. God chooses a mother’s care—gentle, patient, deeply personal—as a way to describe His own love for us. That tells you something about both God and moms. For those who are mothers, your work matters more than you probably realize. The small, daily acts—listening, guiding, encouraging—are shaping lives in lasting ways. And for all of us, whether today is joyful or complicated, we’re reminded that God’s care for us is just as close, just as tender. So, take today to say “thank you” to a mom who’s impacted your life—or to reflect on how you can carry that same kind of steady, compassionate love into the lives of others. And as you do, thank God for the gift of comfort, compassion, and even challenge that out mothers place in our lives.

How do you get a customer to be interested in your product? You tell them you have the best cereal, the toughest truck, longest lasting washing machine. You tell them how they will benefit from using your product.

So, how in the world did Christianity become the largest religion with over 2 billion people claiming to be a Christian? We don't get virgins when we die. We won't have a perfect life or necessarily drive a fancy sports car. Matthew 24:8-10 tells us if we follow Jesus we will be persecuted and possibly put to death. That's not exactly the best sales pitch. "Come join our group and you'll be tortured."

Christianity is the largest religion because it's true and it's the only one that's true. Jesus is God, was born, crucified, then overcame death so that we had a path to be with Him in Heaven. Our riches wait for us in the next life.
