For those who have not heard the sad news, Mike McLaughlin--father of Jack McLaughlin, one of our Battalion alumni in the class of 2021--passed away July 20. Mike had battled a brain tumor for the last 2 years.

Mike started attending Battalion with Jack in 2016 and--despite the workload of running several businesses--quickly became a regular on camping trips and Tuesday nights. He was a loving and faithful friend to many of the other dads and a fun, witty presence on many long hikes and around numerous campfires. Among many happy memories was the Tuesday night Jack and Mike demonstrated safe cooking techniques through a humorous action special skit showing many wrong ways to prepare food safely while camping. Make no mistake, Mike took safety very seriously. In fact, he was the first one to notice a rattle snake in the middle of the trail while we were hiking and immediately went to the front of the line and stopped the hike while the snake crossed the path. That was Mike, always looking out for us.

Mike loved (and now loves even more completely) Jesus deeply. He so enjoyed seeing God in nature, and he had great determination to do so. In 2019 a small group of dads took our sons camping in Wind River Range in Wyoming. Mike had been healing from a shoulder injury that year, and his doctor recommended against the week-long backpacking trip at high altitude. But Mike was determined to go with Jack and the rest of us. On one memorable day, we all hiked up to a 12,000’ ridge overlook on the Continental Divide, and Mike, who had had to work hard and be especially careful of his shoulder, got down on the ground and did pushups. We'll always savor the memory of the joy he showed in that moment and on many other hiking trips.

Please keep Mrs. Helen McLaughlin and Jack and Emma in your prayers as they juggle many demands while grieving Mike's passing. May the finality and poignance of this loss help all who knew and loved Mike taste the goodness of the Gospel, and long even more deeply for the day when all of us, with unveiled faces and new eyes, can see Jesus face to face in His presence.

Our theme verse for the CANOE trip: I Cor 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

Thanks be to God for a great 1st Battalion trip for 2022-2023! About 50 guys and dads enjoyed a safe and beautiful day of canoeing down Antietam Creek. Highlights included squad leaders who stepped up to lead and care for their guys and 2 messages given by Mr. Smith and Mr. Crane—on the resurrection and hope in suffering. Our fall Master Sergeant Gabriel also shared a testimony. Good stuff! Amazing weather! Great fellowship! Time in the Word! Thanks be to God.

Thanks to all the dad helpers and all the non-comm leaders. Come check us out on a Tuesday evening at Annapolis EP Church! (except for on a leaders-only Tuesday night—usually right after a trip) How do you tell which Tuesday to come? Reach out to [email protected]

We gathered at the end of May to celebrate all that the Lord has done and to pray for and send off our seniors--Dakota, Paul, and Ben. These young men also served as our fall and spring master sergeants. We heard testimonies of the work God did in their lives through this ministry by them, by their dads, by the younger non-coms. We also said good-bye to Will who is moving to NC, and we prayed for the young men heading to Camp Hemlock for SALT and to those going to serve as camp counselors.

Thank you to our Battalion Captain as well, Mr. Chip Crane, for all his work to lead the ministry, as well as to the many dads who have helped all year.

II Cor 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.

Please considering giving to this ministry if you can:

More MD Challenge photos! Congrats to all the guys and dads and four alums who came out too! Did you know that 5 dads actually completed the entire 42 mile hike?? It was significantly darker by the time they rolled in than when the younger guys finished but kudos to the dads…some who may have 4 decades on the young ones!

Special thanks to the amazing support team without which such trips are not possible: Mr and Mrs Grube! Mr Bates! Ben Geverdt! Gabriel Crane!

The heart of the Battalion ministry is really about discipleship. The outdoors is the means.

Today, Saturday, May 14, about 20 guys, dads, and Battalion alumni took on the Maryland Challenge--trekking the 42-mile stretch of the Maryland AT in one day! They left Annapolis at 3:00 AM and started hiking at about 5:00 AM. Some had already hiked over 20 miles by noon.

We are kick-starting a fundraiser for Battalion with this hike! Please consider making a donation. Funds will make NOLS certified wilderness first aid training possible and allow us to replace aging equipment and support leadership development and Battalion activities. Thanks for considering! And please share!

Thanks be to God for a great Battalion marksmanship weekend which included a leadership overnight retreat for about 20 non-com student leaders on Friday night led by Mr. Crane. They spent some extended time in prayer for their churches, leaders, schools, teachers, friends, and families. On Saturday to Sunday nearly 60 guys and dads came out for the marksmanship trip.

Special thanks to Christian Graham and his family for the use their property for camping out and shooting and duct tape baseball and 4-square volleyball.

Thank you also to the many dads who stood for hours supervising the shooting range. Thanks to those student leaders who cooked breakfast for the entire group on Sunday.

Thank you, Mr. Schrader, for bringing us the truth from the word of God on the spiritual fruit of peace. Thank you, Mr. Crane, for sharing God’s word from John 15 about abiding in Christ.
Thanks be to God for this ministry we have through His mercy.

Thanks be to God for many answers to prayers this past weekend on BLAST 2022. A shout out to the squad leaders—Andrew, Ian, Michael, Nash, and Will—and their lances (assistant squad leaders) who took care of their guys. It was a challenging hike and the guys testified that the Lord sustained them and built community and perseverance.

Thank you, Mr Farris and Mr Bachmann, for sharing from the Word of God on the spiritual fruits of faithfulness and joy.

We praise God for His faithfulness. There were about 50 guys and dads involved. Every safe step on the trail and every safe mile on the road are gifts from the Lord and answers to prayer.

Thank you and congratulations to senior Dakota Caton for serving as our master sergeant last fall! Dakota showed a servant’s heart in giving up major time and energy to leading and trip planning and making sure his staff of noncoms (leaders) knew what they needed to do to execute our trips and our weekly Tuesday night meetings. Under Dakota’s leadership, we had our largest Bacon and Donuts hike in recent memory! Please pray for Dakota as he waits on and seeks the Lord for college decisions this spring. We are so grateful for the many ways he exemplified servant leadership and continues to do so. What a joy it has been to see him grow in the Lord. Many thanks, Dakota, and the Lord bless you!

AEP Battalion lost a brother January 23 with the passing of David Hannigan (26), after a 2-year bout with cancer. David was involved throughout his middle school and high school years, graduating from SALT and serving on the leadership team 2011-2014. He served on Hemlock staff through this past fall, even as his cancer advanced.

Throughout his illness, David was an inspiring example of fighting the good fight and finishing the race. He never once complained about his pain and misery from the cancer and treatment. He often reminded us that “God knows what He is doing. We can trust Him.” David set an example for all for God-trusting tenacity in the face of hardship.

Please pray for David's family and friends as they grieve.
